Default OS HDD to ext HDD.

I have a Win98se box,
can I remove the HDD,
and hook it up as an external HDD on my XP?
I need to employ USB2 to move 300,000
images over to my XP.
Any warnings or "heads up" ?
Thanks very much.

No such connection exists AFAIK. You could install the HDD as a slave
possibley long enough to do the transfers. Your new box may not
have connections for an IDE drive though. You might also be able to
network the 2 PC's. You could also get hold of an external CD burner
if you do not have one in your 98 box and put them on a CD.

yes if get a usb2/ide enclosure to put the drive in it can be used as an
external usb drive something like
http://www.xpcgear.com/enclosures.html
might be easier to get a crossover rj11 cable and direct link them
or get a router and use both
have a win98 box with 4x160GB drives in it as storage

Cheers Almost Bob, (thanks to lb for responding too)
I have 4 or 5 other enclosures (I should have mentioned this in my OP)
so I know the idea works fine
I was just worried something may be compromised
with an OS on the external drive.
I like the idea of the rj11 cable, and will give it a try
saves opening up the 98se box.

Plug the RJ11 cable in the NIC's of the computer (They both have a NIC?).
Give both NIC's a static IP address in the same range (for instance PC1
10.0.0.1/255.255.255.0 and PC2 10.0.0.2/255.255.255.0). The computers
should now be able to see each other. Share the disk on the W9x system.

Hiya Ingeborg,
Can you please expand on how I may "Give both NIC's a static IP address "
in detail.
They both have NIC's

Thanks for the assistance thus far.
Rod.

In W98: Goto control panel-Network. Select the TCP/IP protocol connected
to the NIC. Choose Properties. Goto tab ip-address and fill the ip-address
(10.0.0.1) and subnetmask (255.255.255.0). W98 will have to reboot.

In XP: Goto control panel-Network connections. Rightclick the 'Local Area
Conntection' and choose Properties. Select TCP/IP and choose Properties.
Fill the ip address (10.0.0.2) and subnetmask. Default gateway and DNS
server can be left empty, in this case.

Just did this file transfer bit. Since both systems support USB 2.0,
I used an 8GB flash drive to do the transfer. Got a generic USB Mass
Storage driver for SE and it had no problems. XP was an automatic.

Had previously tried ad hoc networking, cables, etc., but could never
get any to work consistently. Successfully used Internet-based file
transfer site, 'You Send It', but the USB flash drive was easier and
faster.

Prior to installing SE, I also considered dismantling my laptop to do
the USB enclosure thing on XP, but SE's USB 2.0 support and the flash
drive saved the day.

Flash drives are relatively cheap and getting cheaper. 8GB SanDisk at
Office Max for $59. 4GB for $30. Office Depot will match that price.
