2 probs: scandisk hangs, defrag slow
Setup is as follows:
Thinkpad 600e, std internal hdd (C-drive), external hdd via USB caddy (D-drive). Win98SE Prob1. Scan of C-drive hangs after finding lost strings(?) will not autofix of allow manual fix. tried running it in safemode, still hangs. Scan of D-drive works fine. Prob 2. Defrag of C-drive is OK (provided scan option is deselected) but defrag of D-drive is painfully slow (it took 9 hours to defrag 17% of 8gB then I gave up and cancelled). Can I slip this drive into the C-drive slot and then defrag from the win98se cd-rom? All replies welcomed, thanks in advance. |

It sounds like scandisk is running into a corrupt file. See if this info
helps: See the defrag and scandisk troubleshooters located he http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/how_to.html -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "stefaroo" wrote in message ... Hi Ron
Just before I read your reply I managed to get scandisk of c-drive to run in safe mode, it completed quick and repaired all errors. Haven't looked at the bootlog yet but I should be fine from now on with this problem. Any thoughts on the other problem? I know defrag will be slow via USB but is my suggestion worth a shot or will I be barking up the wrong tree. Thanks for your attention. |

I have no experience with an external drive so I really have no advice to
offer on it. The W98 defrag utility is very slow so you might look at 3rd party defrag programs and see if one of them helps. Do a search on google.com and you probably can come up with a free one or maybe someone will provide a name in response to this post. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "stefaroo" wrote in message ... Hi Ron
Decided to circumvent this ddrive defrag problem by buying a caddy to put the 2nd hdd in the bay where the cdrom is. Thanks again, Stefaroo |
