Default Very slow to open a word file?

I don't know why my notebook is extremely slow to open a word file or the
file manager. I found the problem even when I didn't do anything else. I
doubt it got virus. The notebook is a pentium III 500MHz with win98 O.S.
laptop. It isn't a new
type, but the speed is unusal. I have tried to check the word font. It
seems the supporting font isn't really the trouble. And, The file size I
tried is about 300KB.
May be I should get an up-to-date virus scan software to try.

It's not very possible you got a virus which only effects word.
Haven't you got other symptoms?

Yes, I did. Whenever I was trying to open the file manager or control panel,
the notebook would pause for a while and the speed would be very slow.
And the virus scan software, PC cillin would show me messages that two files
got virus. Besides, I couldn't correctly install a mouse and whenever I was
trying to
remove a hardware, for example, mouse, the notebook would stop. It seems it
was
running something. This is the symptons I saw. Thank you, Steve!

Have you tryed to got to startrun type msinfo32.exe hit OK (
I got a German Windows 98 Version, so it could be slightly
other).

A program will open. There in The third plus from top click
Active Processes (it's the third entry from above again).

I the right pane a list of programs running will appear. See if
there all which are not belonging to what you have installed.

You should delete them or ask baxk here before. So I could
amswer if I'm used to some of them.

I can't really see which is the answer in the last message you wrote.

I will cut out all the text now and would want you to answer again.
Did you check all the running processes in msinfo32.exe? Was
there something unusual.

In some of these notebooks is a option you can choose the
processors speed in the bios. Are you used to this kind of
adjustment?

Thank you, Steve.

Right now my laptop is back to acceptable condition. Congradulations to
myself! Before checking the MSINFO you told, I have tried to use new virus
scan from trendmicro. Then I got more then 1100 files for virus, mailwares
or adwares. It's fatal. I believe this is why the speed became very slow.

Though I stil tried what you told me again. The third plus is the software
environment. And if I open it up, I can find 7 items including drivers,
running program, startup, OLE registration...and so on. Then I selected the
running program; I could find a lot of programs are executing, for example,
Kernel32.dll, MSGSRV32.exe, Mprexe.exe,...and so on. I have checked vendors.
All programs now
are supposed to what I installed. Thank you very much! It backs to normal
now.
