I have heard about some free versions of software packages that one can
download and use to check W98ME systems for viruses, but I do not know if any
of them could be launched at the Dos Prompt. There may be times when a System
may fail to boot successfully and the only way to get anywhere is by using a
Start-up Diskette. Is there some way to check for viruses at the C: Prompt?
Thanks!

Well, when I installed Avast on my daughters machine (Win98SE) recently, it
wanted to install a 'boot check'. When it rebooted, before ANY graphics
came
up, it started a full deep-scan of the system. So, at least I know it can
do it,
but I don't know how it set the flag to do it. It only did it the first
time it ran.
Might be interesting to install it on a fresh system and just see what it
put into
the startup to make it work.

AVG also has the option to make a set of rescue disks

However I believe win98 will not be supported by Grisoft for much longer

Hi,

I use a "paid for version" of AVG+anti-spyware, and just waded through all
the menus - couldn't find a "make a set of rescue disks" option, (perhaps
not available in my XP version? ...yeah yeah I know this is W98 NG :-), but,
would be a handy tool.

TIA

regards, Richard

Extracts from AVG 7.5 Free "Help" pages :-

"AVG Rescue Disk is not supported by Windows XP and higher operating
systems".

Hence, the option :- "The tool for creating the Rescue Disk is the Rescue
Disk Wizard, which can be launched from any AVG interface, by pressing the
Rescue Disk shortcut button, or from the system menu Service - Rescue
Disk." option does not appear in XP, only in Win9x. NTFS issues.

As an alternative, there are antivirus that can be run from a bootable CD.

Check-out the "universal boot CD", free at http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

Download and burn to CD via a program that supports "burn form image". Nero
and Easy CD Creator can do this.

To use such a CD, be sure that the boot order (in the BIOS setup) is CD
before hard drive. In fact, usually for a win98 machine it should be floppy
before CD, and CD before hard drive.

F-Prot is the best for this procedure.

Actually I think the boot diskette has an AV scan included. But I am not
certain, its been awhile.
