What do you mean, you "cannot find" it?
Click StartRun, type dxdiag and click OK.
What version does it show as installed?

Default cant find installed dx 9b (win98 se)

Did you reinstall over the current installation, or format and do a fresh install?
How are you determining what version of DirectX you have at any given moment during
this procedure, or are you just guessing?

What "icon" are you expecting to find?

Have you done as I said, and run DXDIAG to determine the version of DirectX and if
there are any problems? That's the only way you will get the info you need all
the files involved.

Where does it say version 4, in DXDIAG?
Run DXDIAG, look on the first screen (System) and it has a line at or near the
bottom that says DirectX Version.
Here, I have -
Direct X Version: DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902)

The version number 4.09.0000.0902 does not mean DirectX 4, it means DirectX 9

If the music tests fail, you may need to update your audio drivers.

Again I ask: what icon are you talking about, and what does it have to do with
anything?

You say you are not able to install DX9? What happens when you try, and from where
are you getting the copy of DX9 you are trying to install?

Once DirectX 9.0b is installed, it's installed. You don't have to keep installing
it. When you look at file version numbers in DXDIAG, there will be some files that
are earlier....that is normal.

I don't know where you are seeing in Windows Update that you should install MS
Messenger....it is not an update, and there is no reason to install it.

Your time and date may be correct, but check that you also have the correct time
zone selected.
