Dual Booting - Possibly Tri-Booting?
I'm trying to "Dual Boot" using an older version of Win98 and a "newer"
version. I also have XP that I wish to install, along with the two versions of 98, but I might not. What is the best way to install each of these OS's and not have to have a boot loader at startup? I know that when I install XP, it will automatically install the boot loader, but I'd like to bypass that also. Any help will be most appreciated. Al |

The only way to have more than one OS without having some
kind of bootloader or having to have a floppy to boot them up, is to have Separate Hard drives setup on a switch. Each drive will have its own MBR and you will not be able to see the other drive from one OS to the other. Other than that, I am unaware of anyway to install OS's on a dual boot system without having some kind of bootloader. Whether it be XP's, a 3rd party, or a Floppy. -----Original Message----- I'm trying to "Dual Boot" using an older version of Win98 and a "newer" version. My system is set up with 6 OS and no boot loader. The OS
to boot into is set within each OS ... say i in 98 and i want XP next reboot then switch active primary and reboot ... presto. Each OS must go into it's own primary partition and because there can only be 3 primarys if you want a logical chain of extendeds ... 3 OS's per HDD. Take if you want 3 OS : make 3 primarys and then an extended partition with a few logicals in it. Now hide two of the primarys ... boot and install. Do this for each primary .... you now have 3 OS. Only problem left is to select the active (unhidden) partition for next boot. This can be done with GDISK/GDISK32 or pqbw on my sys i have 2 HDD so i set it up for 6 OS but it don't work great and fails for networked boot from second drive when all primarys are hidden/inactive on first HDD. What is really slick with this method is that using ghost one can switch an image in a primary in about 5 min ... so any number of OS can play with. Install it ... image it and place another image there at will. Best |
