mouse/keyboard hang

I've a windows me on compaq desktop bought 2-3 yrs ago..I
connected lexar usb 2.0 drive to one of usb ports and it
didnot work -so i started messing w/device manger and the
next thing i kno my keyboard & mouse dont work..my keybrd
and mouse has usb ends and out of 4usb connections they r
connected to 2 of usb ports provided..
i re-booted system 3x times and could nt mak kyboard &
mouse work.i even played w/bios settings and somehow made
the keyboard work. finally i connect old keyboard & mouse
which uses traditional ps/2 ports..and now im running my
compter w/old keyboard & mouse..I want to start using my
compaq kyboard & mouse again //what steps shld i take.. i
dont want to xperiment and mess up working compaq desktop??

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL USB-related entries
Remove ALL Keyboards
Remove ALL Mice
Remove ALL error-flagged entries
Power down
Plug in your USB Keyboard and mouse
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows should reinstall the correct drivers
