By installing the necessary driver (if any), plugging in your camera or
whatever, and letting Win Me detect the camera's storage and allocate a
letter.

What exactly have you done so far and what problems are you having?

I'm sorry but you appear to have either misunderstood Olympus or alternatively
they don't have a clue which frankly surprises me. May I strongly recommend
that you read the documentation that came with your camera and then install,
if required, any necessary drivers and then connect your camera to a USB port
and let Win Me detect your hardware and assign the necessary drive letter so
that you can then access the camera's storage using Explorer.

You say you have downloaded a "letter assigner". The only letter assigner
that I am aware of allows the use to change the drive letter assigned to a
storage device - something that for removable storage such as a camera can be
done with ease through the Device Manager. This has nothing to do with
connecting the device, your camera, to the system so that you can copy your
photos to your hard disk. All a letter assigner will do is allow you to
change the assigned letter, say from "E" to "V".
