See if this article helps: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296636 If it
doesn't, please post back; however, I don't believe that you have posted the
error message verbatim--please do so and watch for spelling errors.

Try these:
Boot with a Win98 Startup Diskette with CDrom support.
From the DOS prompt enter: Win.com /d:m
That should put you into Windows Safe Mode with CDrom support.
Put in you Win98 CD and with Windows Explorer select the Win98
folder on the CD.
Then use FIND File and Folders under the Tools menu.
In the Named Box enter *.cab.
In the Containing text box enter Himem.sys
The Look in box should already be filled in.

That will locate the CAB file that Himem.sys is in. Double click the
CAB file to open it then right click Himem.sys and extract to the
Windows folder.

The file is probably in the BASE5.cab file so you could also just
d-click that.

OR:

After booting with the Startup diskette enter EXT ( that's right )
and answer the three questions. The path to the cab files is D:Win98
where D: is your CDrom drive letter. It may temporarily be one
letter higher than normal ie; D: to E: The path to extract to
should be C:\Windows

Remove the CD and Diskette then use Ctrl+alt+del to reboot,
hopefully to normal windows.

OR:

From Safe Mode try Start Run and enter SFC. Extract one file,
Himem.sys. Don't use the Scan feature as restoring files that way
can void any updates you have made. More on that later if you are
interested.

Start the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu
appears and select "Command Prompt". Then type
"scanreg /restore", press "Enter" and restore a registry that predates
the problem.

Thanks so much!!!! The computer comes up now but in normal mode the
screen just turns white and does not change. When I get into safe mode
all my files are there. My main objective is to get into the system
long enough to back my files up to a disk. As long as I do that then I
could go ahead and do a complete reformat, but I really really need to
save these files.. And when I'm in safe mode adaptec does not work and
the computer does not recognize any other drive besides the main drive
and the A drive.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for your help! I tried doing this last night but it kept
telling giving me an error file does not exist. I was able to get into
Windows in normal mode for a split second before the screen just turned
white and would not do anything else. When trying to restart using
ctrl alt del it says "msvgr32 not responding". I just need to back up
my files to a cd then I want to completely reformat the computer, but
when in safe mode it does not recognize my D drive.

Are you posting from some other computer? If so, I would remove the drive
from the ailing computer and temporarily hook it up to the ribbon cable that
goes to your CDRom drive on the other PC. Then you could use Explorer to
transfer the files from the old drive to the other drive or you can burn a
CD if the other PC has a burner.

Please confirm that you tried restoring a previous registry.
