Default Fantom Disk Writes

I can't run Scan Disk to completion or load Symantec's GoBack on my Compaq
Desktop because something is writing to my hard disk causing restarts. I
shut down running programs, but this didn't eliminate the problem. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanx, Glen. Culprit was my router. Your suggesting to disconnect a modem
led me to disconnecting the router.

Thanx for these posts. I had same trouble with Defrag. Have stopped programs
(except systray and explorer) and although there are still phantom writes, it
is getting further each time. Better than nothing I suppose.

(it's an IBM thinkpad).
