Default System information

Hi,
I am trying to troubleshoot why my system hangs after a virus scan. As I
was going through the "system information", I noticed in the hardware
resources I/O section there were many devices that had more than one
mention. For example: the Motherboard Resources device is mentioned 10
times, PCI Bus= 5 times, VIA AC'97 Audio Controller [WDM]= 3, Keyboard= 2,
and so on....
I also noticed in the memory section of "system information" there is the
System board extension for ACPI Bios listed 10 times and VIA Tech
VT8361/VT8601 Graphics Controller listed 7 times.

Is this normal for multiple listing of one device and could this be one
of the reasons why I am hanging after a virus scan. If these devices are
only to be mentioned once in system information, then how do I go about
fixing this?

When my system hangs after a virus scan, I would be able to open Explorer
to various directories but it hangs when I try to close the window. This is
also true when opening IE6. I am able to browse various web sites but hangs
when trying to close IE6. The hang would last for about two minutes and I am
able to resume using the computer until I try to close another window. I'm
not sure if the system restore info is useful in this hang situation but it
does look strange to me.
The device manager reports that all devices are working properly and there
are no conflicts.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Oh dear!!
This sort of symptom frequently occurs after mistakenly reinstalling ME over
itself in an attempt to 'cure' problems.

Try this
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
IGNORING the System Devices branch.....
Remove ALL instances of any duplicated items
- start with the Other Devices (if they exist) - remove ALL such!
Display Adapters and Monitors, then Reboot to Normal Mode and back to Safe
Mode
then the Sound & Multimedia and then Reboot to Normal Mode and back to Safe
Mode
Then the IDE Master Controllers - reboot to Normal Mode and back to Safe
Mode
When back in Safe Mode again - list the remaining duplications and attach
them to your response (include ones in the System Devices branch)

HTH - and Good Luck

Thanks Noel,
The only device that were duplicates in safe mode was the "Generic NEC
floppy disk" which I deleted. Attached are the devices which are in the
system branch.

Was that a Safe Mode screen dump? there are no duplicates there apart from
the expected ones for ACPI IRQ Holder...

Ahhh - I misread your original post!
Yes - the duplications you see in that section are perfectly normal - they
refer to areas of RAM that are allocated to the devices, and some devices
require particular areas in particular places for particular purposes (my
motherboard resources, for instance, in my ME Virtual PC, has 18 entries
there!)

What is more likely to show something is the 'Problem Devices' section in
MSINFO32 - if there's anything there other than ACPI IRQ Holder (error 22)
entries, then you may have a problem.

Yes - the duplications you see in that section are perfectly normal -

That explains the many numbered addresses associated to each

Why do you think my system hangs? I've tried installing an updated driver
for the VIA Tech VT8361/VT8601 Graphic Controller at viarena.com, but they
mention that drivers must be compatible with the north/south bridges. I'm
really not sure what they're talking about. I saw a mention of via 4 in 1
driver but now I'm not sure if it's compatible with my display adapter. My
current driver is trid_p3d.drv (v. 4.13.01.3136)

What's your motherboard? - the VT8361/VT8601 is mostly used in onboard
graphics, if I read it right.

You may find it better to go to the motherboard manufacturer's site and
download the latest drivers from there.

Explorer and IE hanging on closing.... could be an Winsock problem...
run the LSPFix from here
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

reboot, and see if that helps

be
one
of the reasons why I am hanging after a virus scan. If these devices
are
only to be mentioned once in system information, then how do I go

about
fixing this?

When my system hangs after a virus scan, I would be able to open
Explorer
to various directories but it hangs when I try to close the window.
This
is
also true when opening IE6. I am able to browse various web sites
but
hangs
when trying to close IE6. The hang would last for about two minutes

and
I
am
able to resume using the computer until I try to close another

window.
I'm
not sure if the system restore info is useful in this hang situation
but
it
does look strange to me.
The device manager reports that all devices are working properly
and
there
are no conflicts.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Thanks Noel.
You've been very helpful.
My motherboard is MS-6368

I tried the LSPFix. It was clean as a whistle. No adjustments were made.

What's your motherboard? - the VT8361/VT8601 is mostly used in onboard
graphics, if I read it right.

You may find it better to go to the motherboard manufacturer's site and
download the latest drivers from there.

Explorer and IE hanging on closing.... could be an Winsock problem...
run the LSPFix from here
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

reboot, and see if that helps

No, Not Norton.

Yes - the duplications you see in that section are perfectly normal -

they
refer to areas of RAM that are allocated to the devices, and some
devices.

That explains the many numbered addresses associated to each
device.

if there's anything there other than ACPI IRQ Holder (error 22)
entries, then you may have a problem.

No conflicts other than (error22).

Why do you think my system hangs? I've tried installing an updated

driver
for the VIA Tech VT8361/VT8601 Graphic Controller at viarena.com, but

they
mention that drivers must be compatible with the north/south bridges.

I'm
really not sure what they're talking about. I saw a mention of via 4 in

1
driver but now I'm not sure if it's compatible with my display adapter.

My
current driver is trid_p3d.drv (v. 4.13.01.3136)

Ahhh - I misread your original post!

require particular areas in particular places for particular purposes

(my

What is more likely to show something is the 'Problem Devices' section

Oh dear!!
This sort of symptom frequently occurs after mistakenly reinstalling
ME
over
itself in an attempt to 'cure' problems.

Try this
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
IGNORING the System Devices branch.....
Remove ALL instances of any duplicated items
- start with the Other Devices (if they exist) - remove ALL such!
Display Adapters and Monitors, then Reboot to Normal Mode and back

to
Safe
Mode
then the Sound & Multimedia and then Reboot to Normal Mode and back
to
Safe
Mode
Then the IDE Master Controllers - reboot to Normal Mode and back to

Safe
Mode
When back in Safe Mode again - list the remaining duplications and

attach
them to your response (include ones in the System Devices branch)

HTH - and Good Luck

As
I
was going through the "system information", I noticed in the

one
mention. For example: the Motherboard Resources device is

I also noticed in the memory section of "system information"

there
is
the

Is this normal for multiple listing of one device and could this

I found driver info for my ms-6368 motherboard at
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...?UID=21&kind=1 ,
and there are two drivers at the bottom of the page. One is the VIA®
KLE133/PLE133 VGA Drivers, and the other is VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers.
Which one should I install?

The VIA one -
There's a utility called Live Update available for most boards - including
yours - which makes this sort of decision easy. - get it from here
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...ist.php?kind=1
it works pretty well on the systems I install it on.
