I can't understand where the IDE controller is coming into this - most USB
external CD's run in emulated SCSI mode.

The only details I can find on LG's site relate to an Internal drive - not
an external one. Who manufactured the case for yours?

Iagree with you regarding advert on LG site but found advert on web which advertised externals. The instruction book is mainly for internals with a small part concerning externals. The firm I purchased it off are called Allcam Mobile Products Ltd.[www.allcam.biz] Its called USB 2.0 LG All formats External DVD Burner with DVD Burning and Video capturing software

From the Allcam site.....
"These external DVD burners are assembled in UK by Allcam with USB2.0 or
Firewire aluminium enclosures and the below mentioned brand DVD burners
(Sony DW-U14A, Toshiba SD-R5112, Pioneer DVR-A06, Panasonic LF-D311, LG
GSA-4040B 4081B, NEC ND-1100, 1300). No software are included unless stated
othersie. The external feature of these drives make it easy to share the
expensive DVD burners among computers, even between PC & MAC , also a very
ideal way to add DVD drive, CD-RW drive and DVD burner to your laptop at the
price of one internal CD drive! "

I really do suggest that you go back to them, and ask for support - you have
a right, Use it!!
