Can't Install Hard Drive
I had to replace my defective hard drive. I installed one that had
been wiped clean by the previous user. As a result, when I attempted to use my HP Recovery CD, it produced the C: prompt but indicated that it was unable to detect a hard drive. I assume that means that the hard drive has to be formatted because when I checked the bios startup both the Primary and Secondary Slaves said "None." Does that mean that I have to Format the drive before the drive is recognized? Also, is there any way around the use of a boot up floppy? Unfortunately, I do not have one, and my second computer does not have a floppy drive. |

Can't Install Hard Drive
A drive does not need to be formatted to be recognised by BIOS, and probably
not even for the recovery CD to use it. But if BIOS doesn't see it then the restore CD certainly won't. You should check the installation of the new drive, as it appears something is wrong with the hardware (such as cables). Get a hard drive diagnostic routine from the www site of the disk drive manufacturer - it might indicate what has gone wrong with the installation. If the hard drive is not working or is not formatted the only option is to install a floppy drive that works, or use a CD drive and bootable CD. Most Windows 98 CDs aren't bootable. If yours is (a recovery CD might be) then your BIOS needs to support booting from CD for it to work. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) wrote in message ...
