Win98se won't complete boot-up
"John Ochs" wrote in message news:... I tried to install a HP1310 printer and was unsuccessful. I tried to uninstall it and I'm afraid that the uninstall took something needed with it as it now hangs in the middle of loading windows. It just stops. I ran a startup in Safe mode and in the bootlog I found two errors. Init = Mouse Status = Mouse driver installed InitDone = Mouse Init = LoadStart = DISPLAY.drv LoadSuccess = DISPLAY.drv I wondered if the "Init = ". was the root cause of the stall in loading Windows. Then there is this failed entry: [000C4E79] Dynamic load failed C:\WINDOWS\system\IOSUBSYS\smartvsd.vxd : [000C4E79] Not a valid device - possibly corrupt How would I fix these failures? I assumed that the numerous font failures were due to using Safe Mode in creating this BootLog. Complete bootlog is attached. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Can you boot to Safe mode? If so, open Explorer and go to the
c:\windows\system\iosubsys folder and move this file to another location. To do this, you can right-click and choose Cut, then right-click on another folder and choose paste, or you can use drag n drop. Once you have done this exit and restart. If you get an error message about the system not being able to find this file, then run Regedit. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD. Find smartvsd.vxd on the list and delete it. There are several failures in the bootlog that are normal. See this article: Load Failures Listed in the Bootlog.txt File http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=127970 PattyL "John Ochs" wrote in message news "John Ochs" wrote in message news:... This removed the error for the Smartvsd.vxd but I still can't complete the
boot process. It hangs in the same place every time. I have run Registry Mechanic, RegClean, Registry Checker and none find any errors. Any ideas where I should look next "PattyL" wrote in message ... Can you boot to Safe mode? You might take a look at this article:
Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188867 If that doesn't help you fix it, you might think about installing to a new folder. See this article: How to Install Windows 98 Into a New Folder http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=193902 If you decide to try installing over the current installation as a troubleshooting step, be sure to uninstall Internet Explorer first. You want to get back to the version that shipped with your version of Windows. Do this from Control Panel, Add/remove programs. When you are back to the original version, it will no longer show up here as available to uninstall. Installing Windows over a version with an updated Internet Explorer will result in mismatched files and your Internet access will be broken until you install the version that you had upgraded to or a newer version than that. Thanks for the help Patty. After 5 days of troubleshooting I bought a much
larger hard drive, removed the old drive and switched to XP and reinstalled the old drive and picked off the files I wanted to keep. It will now get reformated and placed in an older computer my daughter uses for word processing. Again, thanks for the help. "PattyL" wrote in message ...
