Boot sequence needs boot in the behind.
10 gig HD with W98 crashed. New 7.5 gig hard drive installed with 98
SE. Shop mentioned something about possible motherboard glitch. Boot sequence: Power on. Dell screen with big blue D and full progress bar for about a minute. Then two lines on black screen. Primary hard disk drive 1 not found. Strike F1 to continue, F2 to run setup utility. Hit F1 Active Windows 98 logo screen for about 20 seconds. Back to black screen with four lines- Primary hard disk drive 1 not found. Strike F1 to cont.......etc.... C:\rem - by windows 98 network - C:\windows\network. C:\ " Wait a bit with no response or alt key required. Desktop loads. Everything works. Tried F2 for setup and tried different 'boot sequence' options. No change in above boot sequence. Slightly off-target automated response from Dell mentions 'out of box' problems and suggestions for sequential IDE and power cable disconnects, re-connects and initializations. Sound like a reasonable idea? Any other suggestions? Thanks. Keith (wish I'd saved my browser's 'Favorites' list) |

Boot sequence needs boot in the behind.
To add to AB, make sure the ribbon cable is properly seated/connected on the mobo
IDE connector and on the drive. Make sure you have the drive set as Master if it is the only one on the cable. Get back in the BIOS and see if the drive is detected/listed and the settings for it are correct. The shop that "mentioned something about possible motherboard glitch", did they work on it? If the boot tells you twice that no Primary Disk is found and suggests running setup, that means the BIOS can't find it and either it;s something I mentioned above or the mobo is going south. -- Brian A. Sorry for the delay guys, major deconstruction of 92 Grand Am in progress.
All IDE and power cables pulled from all drives and reattached and seem solid. Same hard drive message at boot. Receipt from shop says 'mobo conflict resolved'. Is mobo replacement a snap or potential snafu? May be a bit green with computers but real handy with gizmos and tinkering.. (and tampering?).. Thanks. "Brian A."
