DNS enable appears to cause problems:
Let us know if there is any improvement.

I am not a networking expert, but I don't know why that web site tells you to change the configuration on the TCP/IP properties' DNS Configuration tab....there is no need to do that. A HOSTS file for this purpose works with those properties set at 'Disable DNS'. OK. Secondly, it is my understanding that this *must* be the first line of the HOSTS file: 127.0.0.1 localhost It is in mine. The file I see on the web site you linked (hosts.txt), does not have that as the first line. Several months ago, I got my host file from: # http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ # I suggest you re-name the HOSTS file to Hosts.old, change your TCP/IP properties to 'Disable DNS', click OK and reboot. I will unchange my Network change. Thanks FACE Then download the HOSTS file at the link below, set it in your Windows folder, and see how things work for you: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Read the whole page, while you're there....heck, check out the whole site! http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ |

I can tell you right now that I did not see your message till late last night and this morning it came up just fine without any changes which I intend to make if/when the problem reappears. What i did different today was start out going straight through my ISP and not through a purely external call. Let me know if you read my entire original post including the paragraph about the "excruciatingly obvious" solution. I had already read that entire page, plus 2 others because i seldom take a single web source as a complete answer or necessary procedure. |

Yes, I have read your original post, and as I mentioned, I am not a networking
expert. However, I have never seen any instructions that required you to Enable DNS in order to use a HOSTS file. I suggest you ask the question on the Networking newsgroup, where the experts may be able to give you an explanation for the behaviour. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "FACE" wrote in message ... Yes, you did mention that you were not a networking expert. That makes at
least two of us, then. G The problem I had with the problem was that it was/is intermittent. I just hate intermittent computer problems! May I say that I am glad that you did not take my last reply in an untoward way which it was not meant to be. This group is by nature, and to an extent by some necessity, solution oriented and not discussion oriented. It looks like a likely victim ng for this might be comp.os.ms-windows.networking.tcp-ip You and several others do a good job here -- sort of a free computer clinic. DNS enable appears to cause problems:
Generally, DNS should be enabled on the ISP connection not on the protocol.
