DNS enable appears to cause problems:
Win98SE
Host file active Network OptionsTCP/IP Dial-up set to "enable DNS checking" I am on a Dial-up system. According to a document at http://www.uraniannights.com/www/dea...ity/hosts.html, i enabled DNS checking in Network, host set to "localhost, DNS search order has the single entry of 127.0.0.1, I set these Options in order to bolster the effect of the HOSTS file. It certainly appeared to do so. The problem is that after a cold boot, common URLs come up "page not found." IOW, it appears that no DNS is getting out of 127.0.0.1. The excruciatingly obvious solution is to go back into Network Options and disable DNS checking, which was the default on my installation. HOWEVER, to do so does not address the problem. WINS in Network Settings is blank...totally unset. IP Address is set to "obtain an IP address automatically". The workaround solution - which still does not address any problem -- is to do a warm reboot after a cold reboot -- at which time every thing is fine insofar as external DNS resolutions. Any other answers necessary to get an actual answer that addresses and solves this problem and keeps DNS enabled can probably be provided. Thanks, FACE |

That is selected (at the bottom of the dialogue box). I also re-read, and i think i may have possibly originally misread, the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...7/wrkappg.mspx Specifically, the paragraph: "Important To use the HOSTS file for name resolution, the Enable DNS option must be selected. To do this, use the DNS Configuration tab in TCP/IP properties in the Network option in Control Panel. " BUT......if i did misread it, it does not explain why it is an intermittent problem -- for example, everything is fine right now and I have made no changes. When it is not working for things like "Yahoo" my email access (and my NNTP access--but that may be an entirely different kettle of fish) is unaffected. It does appear that anything that wishes to go *outside* of my ISP IP is lost -- however, my ISP IP does NOT occur in the HOSTS file AND viewing my email client's Account Settings (Netscape) the mail server is identified by domain, not by IP. (Please let me in on whether this paragraph is coherent. G) FACE |

First of all, I use a HOSTS file to block ads, and it works just fine without having
to make the changes you made in the Network control panel. I am not a networking expert, but I don't know why that web site tells you to change the configuration on the TCP/IP properties' DNS Configuration tab....there is no need to do that. A HOSTS file for this purpose works with those properties set at 'Disable DNS'. Secondly, it is my understanding that this *must* be the first line of the HOSTS file: 127.0.0.1 localhost The file I see on the web site you linked (hosts.txt), does not have that as the first line. I suggest you re-name the HOSTS file to Hosts.old, change your TCP/IP properties to 'Disable DNS', click OK and reboot. Then download the HOSTS file at the link below, set it in your Windows folder, and see how things work for you: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Read the whole page, while you're there....heck, check out the whole site! http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "FACE" wrote in message ...
