Regedit problem

Start Run Open: regedit Edit Find (example) type "Recent" Press
F3 Few presses later regedit closes.

No known viruses, etc. Ran Spybot and Ca Anti-Virus.

How do I repair this glitch?

Martin....ignore anything Har Har Harry says.....he is a total idiot!!
And he regularly messes up his own computer, so should not even begin to
think of offering advice.

Seem to recall this (or similar report) from many years ago but can't
remember the fix. Apart from viruses, I do vaguely recall mention of a
corrupted/damaged regedit.exe file but not necessarily in this context.

Although probably nothing to do with Quickbooks in your case, the article
does make mention of other possible occurrences or damaged or missing
regedit.exe file and just clutching here but maybe a possible
faulty/corrupted copy of regedit.exe has also occurred in your case too -
obviously not unprecedented!

See the WinMe section of the article or just extract a fresh copy from
WIN_17.CAB (using msconfig if necessary) and see if that helps.

Sorry, if a bum-steer - but has to be worth a try.

Might also be worth a further trawl in the MS knowledgebase. Good luck.

Thanks, but that did not do it. I also searched the knowledgebase and did
not find anything useful.

Additionally, even a system restore did not do the trick.

Any other suggestions?

lines, I suppose - I did find this site which *may* help and again, be worth
a try :-

where Ramesh talks of odd-ball issues with Regedit (amongst others) and
it may have been this (not dissimilar) aspect which I was thinking of in my
original reply. But as you've already tried a couple of AV utilities and an
SR then I can't think of anything else at present.

OK, tried making a copy of Regedit.exe and renamed it. This did not solve
the problem.

Then, found some interesting behavior:

Regedit only closes when the F3 key is used to "Find Next". If I use Ctrl-F
or the menu to open the search dialog and click Find Next, it does NOT shut
down. But press F3 a few times and it does.

Got any further ideas?

Not really, except to suspect that it may no longer necessarily be a regedit
problem.and wonder if you have another application (a game perhaps) which
permits the user to programme Function keys?

The 'standard' keyboard shortcuts are listed here :-
"Keyboard shortcuts for Windows"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449/en-us
and clearly shows only the one function for the F3 key.

Just a bit of lateral thinking - do you use a wireless keyboard?
If so, are the batteries still OK?

Beyond that - fresh out of ideas!

Oh! - Just a further thought, are the actual number of F3 key presses
consistent before regedit closes, or does the number vary? If so, by how
many (e.g. + or - 3 etc.)?

(Don't know what it might prove, but if consistent then it suggests
something programmable)

Mebee the F3 key has gone haywire ... eg. it *may* be broken.
Try another keyboard and see if the behavior persists.

You might be able to use TweakUI to repair RegEdit. I don't have a link for
the appropriate version of TweakUI, but I'm sure someone here can supply it
for you.
