Default hi-speed connection

1a. I have Earthlink/Sprint-DSL and Linksys-wireless set-
up.
1b. My IBM-laptop with Windows2000 is running at the
expected connect speed for both up/downlinks.
1c. My Emachines desktop with Windows98 takes roughly 10x
longer for up/downlinks.

2. Earthlink/Sprint tell me that, since I get the expected
connect speed with the laptop, they have done their work.
They go on to say that the desktop seemingly must be
running something in the back-ground that is causing it to
run so slowly and that is my problem to fix.

3a. I will admit to my ignorance in trying to find out
what is running in the back-ground.
3b. I looked at "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs" and noted
25 folders and 12 programs but I have no idea if I am in
the right area or not for programs running in the back-
ground.

4. I would really appreciate any assistance.

It was suggested to use msconfig to disable the programs
not wanted; but not knowing anything about msconfig, I did
a web-search and found Mike Lin's site that helped
immensely.
Apparently, msconfig may not be the best way to handle the
problem but it is working for now.
My wife is very impressed with the speed improvement and I
am too.
