Default modem dissconects after handshake

when my modem dials up i can hear it "handshaking" with
the other computer. after its done it says "connecting",
but then it cuts me off a few seconds later.

do you have any idea what settings i need to change to get
the modem to fully connect?

Do you get an error message upon disconnection? If not how long does it take
to establish a connection? Maybe you have the time for the "cancel call if
not connected within" option set too low. Maybe the quality of the telephone
line has deteriorated causing the time required for connection to increase.
Also the line could have deteriorated so bad as to cause a failure in
negotiation to establish the connection but I think you would get an error
message of some sort then.

This can be a problem at the ISPs end. Work through things with their tech
support first.
