Default Affects of re-install?

Hi all,

I have W98FE on a machine that has a registry that will
not let me re-install my printer. I would like to run setup
again and re-install W98FE on top of the current install.
How will this affect the software that was installed after
the os is installed? Will I have to re-install all the software
that was added or just rebuild the links?

thanks,
charles.....

It should not effect any of the currently installed software since the
registry is not rewritten on an over the top install. For the same reason,
it probably will not fix your problem and may even cause further problems.
Perhaps the best thing to do is fully document your problem and see if
someone can help you with it.

Reinstalling over the top should only be used as a last resort, just to let
you back in to collect your personal data before performing a
reformat/reinstall, and yes, you may have problems with installed programs
and, more importantly, Windows Updates. You won't know if the Updates have
been "broken" by over-installing older files than those now in place, so the
only decent option is to manually install all of them after the reinstall.
Even then, you will still have a decent chance of DLL Hell causing problems
with apps.

And, after all that, I seriously doubt that it will solve your problem. What
printer? What are the error messages?

Over-installing ANY OS is not recommended as it has the potential of
installing older dlls and exes which will conflict. If necessary, install
into a new folder, which should pick up the old settings and applications,
then delete the old installation after making sure the system recognizes the
new install as the running OS. SUCH AS:
If Windows was originally installed into c:\Windows you would install
into c:\Win98 .

But before you do this [I won't put the links to show the full aspects/how
this is accomplished yet]:

As for the printer issue;

What make and model of printer are you attempting to install?

Did you uninstall the printer first before trying to re-install?

Did you search the registry for old entries from the original, which may be
causing the failure to re-install?

Running the Setup from a Windows DOS prompt should not affect your programs. However you will have
to use Windows Update afterwards.

If you run Setup from DOS, it will probably replace the registry and wipe out your programs.

If he installs into a new folder, the registry is written anew and any files
for the installed programs will be missing. Installing in a new folder is
just like installing to a clean (formatted) disk except that the previous
system files and personal files will still be available for transfer.

Doesn't matter how you start Setup.

Any reinstall "over the top" will (mostly) not replace the Registry, nor
*should* it affect applications, but there's that DLL Hell to worry about.
