display wont work

yeaterday i scaned for updates and it gave me 2 critical updates
security update msxml4.0 and microsoft.net framework1.1 service pack 1
after a success dowload i ended up with somenew programs on my computer
..net framework data access, vgxq833989, xlm parser and sdk
i dont have a clue of what these are and i am wondering if this is causing
my problem
here is what happens when i go to display in control panel i get an error
mesage microsoft visual c++ runtime runtime error c/windows/rundll32.exe
and when i right click on my desk top i get microsoft visual c++ runtime
runtime error c/windows/explorer and then it shuts dowm explorer
i am lost. thanks for the help

The most common reason for seeing Explorer errors such as you report is
due to the system having unwanted malware installed, most often a
commercial parasite of some form. Personally I feel it unlikely that
either of the updates you installed will have caused this problem. You
might want to think about using system restore to roll your system back to
the state it was in before these errors started, provided that that was
not more than a few days ago.

When did you last check your system for malware using your preferred
antivirus
application making sure first that you are using an updated current set of
viral reference signatures?

This might be a good time to download yourself a copy of the free Ad-Aware
SE Personal edition from Lavasoft
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and also SpyBot Search &
Destroy 1.3 (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and use them to check your
system for other commercial parasites remembering that they are only as
good as when you last updated their reference files. I also use a program
called BHODemon (http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm that
checks for unwanted Browser Help Objects and SpywareBlaster
(http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html) which can help
prevent some parasites getting a grip on your PC.

Just is case the problem is due to a new version of the CoolWebSearch
parasite you might want to download and run the CWShredder which targets
that specific parasite. Unfortunately neither AdAware or SpyBot seem to be
able as yet to fully detect all the various versions of the CoolWebSearch
parasite as it keeps changing. The latest version of CWShredder can be
downloaded (free) from
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract..._download.html

Finally if you still continue to experience problems download a copy of
HijackThis from (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html).
Create a folder called HJT on C: (not on your desktop nor in your temp
folder) and copy the file you downloaded to that folder. Close as many
applications as you can including all instances of Internet Explorer.
Enable Explorer to see all files and folders (Tools | Folder Options |
View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected
operating system files") and then run hijackthis.exe and post back the log
to either the HijackThis Forum at http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
alternatively http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 and hopefully this
will enable someone to identify the cause of your problem.

i have mcfee antivirus and i check for updates daily
and i did a scan yesterday and came up with nothing
1 more thing my system restore is not working i cant creae any restore
points or go to any previous restore points
but i will try your sugestions

Note that McAfee is an antivirus application and does not specifically
target commercial parasites nor trojans and the like although it will
catch some of these classes of malware. Regrettably nowadays users
accessing the net need to use more than just an AV application to prevent
their PCs being adversely affected by all the various malware that is
currently prevalent on the net.
