Default Java

When my original ME Java became inopeable I installed Sun Java SE VI.
4.2 _ 05, which worked fine for about one year. Now when I go to a web
page that involves Java my system freezes. Thanks for any solutions or
suggestios.

L.B.,

The version of Java installed now contains a serious vulnerability :
http://secunia.com/advisories/13271/

Advise you to uninstall the JRE from Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel and then download the latest version and save it :

Download J2SE JRE
http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/...actionId=noreg

Close IE, then install it. Once it's installed open the Java Plug-in in
the Control Panel. Remove the mark next to " Show Java in System Tray ",
click the Cache tab, reduce the size of the Cache to 10MB. Click the
Apply button and close the Java Plug-in.

Yo Mow.....that is the version of Java that I have installed. And you know
I get mightily confused about this plugin. Looking at the Control Panel and
it says "Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.2._05" and
"Default Virtual Machine Version 1.4.2_05=b04.

I hit Update in the Control Panel and it said I had the latest version. So
should I do the same as the OP???? This is a most confusing plugin (for me,
anyway).

Cheers......and loved the LA Times write-up......Heather

Thanks, Figgs ... it IS very confusing and everyone who use to whine
about MS should now direct it towards Sun. I always uninstall the
previous version as it seems to create a melange of Java installs in
A/R.
The "Update" feature is_not_good and should NOT be depended on.
Recommend you uninstall 1.42_05 from A/R and then use the link I
gave LB to obtain 1.42_06 ... ( thanks for the reminder, hadn't
updated JRE yet )

Hi Mow......uninstalled the old one and put the newer one on last night.
And you are right......I remember now that I had two folders on here because
I installed one over the other. Doesn't seem to merge......or whatever the
'techie' term is. (G)

Cheers...Figgs

I have installed Sun Java Stndard Edition 1.4.2._06 exactly as indicated by
MowGreen. My system continues to freeze when entering a web page involving
Java. Any more ideas?

So did I and it is working just fine. You DID remove all of the previous
version, I trust. I have used at least 3 versions of it so far and never
had any freezing problems. So perhaps it is something else that is causing
your problem, in conjunction with this.

Heather, I uninstalled the 05 version, then installed the 06 versions,
seperately (having only one version installed at one time). The only time
the system freezes is when I go to a Java web page.

L.B. ,

Open Internet Options in the Control Panel and then click the
Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Java section and make sure that the
Sun package is checked and that the MS one is UNchecked.
*Sometimes* the video display adapters may need updating ( check
with the adapter's manufacturer's web site for a newer driver ) and
*sometimes* the java package may be corrupted during installation
due to an antivirus program running in the background during the
install ( hello, Norton ? ).
Also, check the size of the java cache by going to Java Plug-in in
the Control Panel, clicking the Cache tab, and reducing it to 10 MB.
A corrupted cache *may* cause this behavior.
