ME Network Login
I recently networked my Windows ME PC. I would like to know if there would
be any way of disabling the Network Login that now pops up at power-up and after rebooting???? Thanks, Brian |

log in, then go to Network Neighbourhood, and change the default logon to
Windows Logon - reboot, and accept the logon (with no password, preferably) that should be the last time you see it. If that doesn't work..... You might find this KB article helpful:- "How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at Startup" http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;152104 -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "BMeyers" wrote in message ... Windows ME Doesn't have a network neighborhood.
I used the procedure in the KB Article. And I am still required to login. Do you have any other suggestions. Win Me DOES have a "Network Neighbourhood" you may just have chosen not to
display it on the desktop. If having changed to using Windows Logon as suggested in the KB article you are still being asked for a password then either look for and delete or rename the PWL file in the Windows folder for your user_id, that is the file called user_id.pwl where user_id is your username, or reset the password for your user_id using the method set out in the KB article. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP BKMeyers wrote: Windows ME Doesn't have a network neighborhood. My computer HAS "My Network Places" at least that is where I am made the
change to 'Windows Logon'. I have renamed the .pwl to .old like instructed in KB article 152104 (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;152104). I have restarted the computer several times and Windows has not created a new .pwl file, which OK with me. I still get the 'Logon' prompt and can cancel out of it and still get to my desk top. Why can't the prompt be prevented/disabled. Any new suggestions???? Brian "Mike M" wrote in message ... Brian,
No need for any new suggestions. Rather than cancel out of the logon prompt, which by the way can cause some problems such as the inability to save password since you will not have logged on correctly an be considered instead to be a guest user, click OK. You should not then be asked again for either a login name or password. Incidentally Network Neighbourhood and My Network Places are effectively the same thing. On my boxes I have neither My Network Places or even Network Neighbourhood but rather simply "Home" since the icon on the desktop can be renamed to whatever the user prefers and in my case Home is the name of my LAN. :-). -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP BKMeyers wrote: My computer HAS "My Network Places" at least that is where I am made the change to 'Windows Logon'. Probably easier to get in via wireless but then again I have the WAP disabled when not required - talking of which I haven't seen my laptop fort at least the last couple of months. Grrr. Daughters, who'd 'ave 'em. :-) -- Mike |

Now you knew this was going to happen when you bought it g I'm surprised
that you even got hold of it long enough to take with you to America g I was thinking of replying to Noel's post saying he probably had no chance with your setup but decided not to vbg Joan Mike M wrote: Noel Paton wrote: Oh, goody - an easy LAN to hack! Becs had to fight hard to take it to Edinburgh for August. They both have good reasons to have one of their own but that would mean them digging a bit deeper into their pockets than either is inclined to do and might even require one of them to think about getting a job. Fat chance at the moment. :-) I was thinking of replying to Noel's post saying he probably had no chance with your setup but decided not to vbg I've nothing special - honest. Not that there's anything worse nicking though either. vbg -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP |
