Default DirectX for Win98SE

I have a P3 600, 256 SD ram, ATI Radeon 7000, 32meg DDR video card.
What is the best, trouble free version of DirectX to use with this
configuration? From my research DirectX 8.1 seems to be the right fit.
I have both 8.1 + the October 2006 DirectX 9c. Not being very
technical, please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

I've used both on win98SE and have had no problems ...the only real hitch is
that some of the more recent software requires DX9 (b or c).

so stay with 8.1 if you wish and upgrade as required :

Thanks Haggis. That was my feeling as well. If I want to upgrade to 9c
at some point, must I uninstall 8.1 or just install 9c on top of it?

as far as I know , it is an over the top upgrade ...(unless the 8.1 install
is having some problem, then I might uninstall)

be for-warned that once you do the 9C upgrade ..it is VERY difficult to go
back :

Haggis, I value your espertise. I just installed 8.1, problem free,
working great, will stick with it. I think 9c is probably a better fit
for XP. Thanks for the warning + your assistance.

glad I could help ...just FYI , I have 9c installed on my win98 with no
problems to report...should it shouldn't be an issueto upgrade if your setup
is working now.

something I should have done earlier ...your video card does not seem to be
DX9 compatible

a.. Supports DirectX® 7.0, DirectX® 8.0 and OpenGL®

...so stick with DX8.1 (you can still upgrade but you would not see any
difference in performance)

Haggis, that was my thinking also, when I saw that the Radeon 7000 was
DirectX 7 or 8 supportive, that's why I chose 8.1 because you can't go
any higher for this particular video component. My repair techie is
very conversant with 98SE, he continues to use it on his desktop, he
just put in the Radeon 7000 for me. Again thanks, this forum is
terrific, an invaluable source of 98SE info from folks who are always
willing to help, especially someone like me who is not of the computer
generation, although I am becoming braver in trying things on my own.
