Windows Update problem
Having trouble with Windows Update.
(for Win98SE, fresh install on formatted HDD) At the 'Welcome to Windows Update' screen, 'Scan for Updates': Begins page scanning for updates, then returns page 'Windows Update Error'. 'Windows update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page'. What is the likely cause of the problem? Roger R |

first you will have to install IE6 in order to continue somehow.
However I would like to pint out, that even after installation of IE6, the update website does not fuction at present properly for w98, it will probably telle that you are using mac and should therefore visit other website. You will have to collect all pssible updates from catalog of dangerous updates for the time being. "Roger R" wrote: Having trouble with Windows Update. Windows Update problem
Thanks for the advice.
I have only IE 5 from the Win98SE disk so it is useful to know the first step is to update to the latest available in order to proceed. I had wondered if the problem might be due to the hardware firewall in my switch/router thingy, but after your comments that now seems unlikely. And yes, I have been getting the 'this is only for windows computers, not mac' redirection message on the Windows update page, though appear to get past that at one stage to get to the 'scanning for updates' section. So thanks again for the tips. Roger R "Otto Sykora" wrote in message ... first you will have to install IE6 in order to continue somehow. Windows Update problem
Just to let you know that I have successfully upgraded to IE6 and used the
Windows Update scan tool to detect and install the 26 critical updates to win98SE. The Windows Update page to start the scan for Win98SE patches is at: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp Hope that may be of use to others.
