Default beep every so often

My computer is an IBM PC 300PL Win 98se os, 500 mhrtz pIII processor
with 768 mb ram. Every so often my computer makes a single beep. How
do I find out what this means?

Hi John,
Before we can even begin to try to ascertain the problem, we need details.
When does the beep occur, and what are you doing when it does it? Are there
any error messages with this? Please post back.

OK the best I can describe the conditions a
1. No messages associated with beep.
2. Single beep only
3. Not necssarly doing anything at all
4. Random occurrences.
5. Best description that I can think of is that it reminds me of the
kind of beep you get when something is wrong during bootup. It sounds
like that tone.

Is the beep coming from the audio speakers (the same speakers that are used for
playing a CD or listening to music online); or is it coming from the system speaker
(a very small speaker inside the computer case, that is used for bootup beep?

Hi John,

Mine would do that when the power supply fan was running slow. A little
oil in all the fans, case, CPU, graphics card etc. might be all you
need, but keep your fingers crossed.

OK, I think I know what is going on so let me run this by you and get
some comments. System calls for varying ram configurations. I
installed 3 256mb sticks. Although win 98 se supports that the sticker
under the cover states max configuration is three sticks of 128 mb
each totaling 384mb of ram. Since I had 768 mb ram installed, even
though the system supported it, I think it corrupted some keys in my
registry. I ran Norton on the registry check and it showed that there
were corrupted entries in the registry. I tried to import my backup
registry but it had a problem doing that. I think the beep (computer
speaker) was trying to tell me there was a conflict in my registry. I
also ran Norton on the memory checker and it always came back as an
error at such and such an address unless I ran each stick in slot 0. I
am using my laptop now because I can't get into my other computer. I
put 3 128 mb sticks into my system and now want to get back in. Can I
somehow go in through dos and fix the registry? I sure hope so, since
I hate to think that I will have to reformat the hdd. I realize now
that I should of followed the configuration of memory on the sticker
even though win 98se will support a larger amount. I do have a backup
registry on the hdd if I can just write it into the registry.
Comment/ideas?

Thanks, I was able to restore my registry. You really saved my novice
rear end!!!!! Note, I still hear the beep. I will check out the fan
for possible lubrication. Any other ideas?

The IBM PC 300PL came in a number of different models.....Type 6562, 6565, 6584,
6592, and so on up to 6892. Which model do you have? You can find out how much
memory it can support once you have identified the correct model.

I have no idea what the beep is that you are hearing, if it is in fact a beep. Does
it also happen in Safe Mode? What about after doing a clean boot?

IBM PC 300PL
M# 6862-ACU
S# 78-XK3ZG

It calls for 3 128mb sticks of ram for max. memory. I can only pass
the Norton Works memory test with 2 sticks in it. If I put in all 3
sticks it says I have a memory error at such and such an address. So I
just keep 2 128 sticks in it until I figure what is going on. I still
get a periodic beep from the computer speaker at no particular time.
Also I continue to get a high severity registry error when I run the
one button scan. Is there a more indepth registry scan program that
will help me find out what the problem is?
