Default Cannot find server the page cannot be displayed

More trouble! Couple of weeks ago I posted "Click on URL and nothing
happens" which was fixed with, Start | Run | regsvr32 urlmon.dll. The
problem returned intermittently and now I get this error message:
------------------------------------------------------------
Cannot find server The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site
might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust
your browser settings.

Please try the following:
Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click
Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings
should match those provided by your local area network (LAN)
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). If your Network
Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network
and automatically discover network connection settings. If you would
like Windows to try and discover them, click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and
then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security
you have installed. If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure
your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then
click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security
section and check
settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0. Click the Back button
to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer
----------------------------------------------------
My home page will open but only at boot up. I did all the obvious things
as suggested in previous problem. The Internet connection is operating
and OE is functioning but IE returns the above message. Using w98se, OE6
& IE6. HELP! TIA

Sounds to me like you have some active spyware/virus messing with your
system. See my article at http://grystmill.com/articles/security.htm (if you
can get there.) See, also, http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Thanks for reply Gary, unfortunately I can't get there from here, as IE
is inoperative. I will shut down/disconnect or uninstall my
spyware/virus software or use a friend's computer if necessary to reach
those URLs. I will let you know if I get it fixed or not.

Well the computer is working, somewhat.

If you are still following this thread here is my latest update. I used
another computer and copied all the pages from your posted URLs. Deleted
all my spyware and tried all suggestions even a re-installing w98se as
per Shep's site, NADA! Lastly I did a scanreg /restore and that appears
to have fixed the problem, maybe? HOWEVER, somewhere along the way my
"A" floppy drive became my Zip drive and my "D" zip drive disappeared.

Also, The Boot-Time Diagnostic Screen listed the following: "event log
messages, enter Setup to view". The BIOS event log capacity indicated
(no space and invalid). Clearing all DMI event logs fixed that. I'm not
afraid of the BIOS but no expert at it.

So, how to I get the drive strengthened out and maybe the BIOS needs
tweaking? I'm about to the point of doing another format/install.
But I really appreciative you're getting me to this point thank you both
for your help. I'll do another post for the drive situation and maybe
another in an appropriate NG for some questions on the BIOS.

Recognizing that your machine was seriously infected, you should know that
it is unlikely that you truly cleaned all of the baddies out. Such
infections tend to cascade, with one nasty dragging in others to the party.
There are many that do irreparable damage to the OS and or lower-level
functions on the drive. (Well, perhaps not totally irreparable, but the work
involved is tremendous!) Take it from me, major infestations are almost
never satisfactorily solved.

If you truly wish to end up with a stable system, you'd be wise to retrieve
your personal files, copying them to CD or internet storage, etc., then
FDISK, FORMAT and reinstall the system from scratch.

I tend to figure that if standard cleaning apps can't complete the task,
and/or the system remains unstable afterwards, that it's time to give up.
Most important, of course, is to properly protect the newly installed system
*before* the baddies can get in, and to practice safe surfing habits.

I can't thank each of you enough for your help. Freely devoting your
time and sharing your expertise is commendable. Could not have done it
without your assistance.

My computer is now usable with some lingering problems. I will bite the
bullet and FDISK, FORMAT. Which is the easy part, it's the program
installations and set up that consume much time, aggravation and mental
fatigue. Just a tactful way of saying drive me nuts!

perhaps not totally irreparable, but the work involved is

tremendous!) Take it
from me, major infestations are almost never satisfactorily solved.

If you truly wish to end up with a stable system, you'd be wise to

retrieve your
personal files, copying them to CD or internet storage, etc., then

FDISK, FORMAT
and reinstall the system from scratch.

Well the computer is working, somewhat.

If you are still following this thread here is my latest update. I

used
another computer and copied all the pages from your posted URLs.

Deleted
all my spyware and tried all suggestions even a re-installing w98se

as
per Shep's site, NADA! Lastly I did a scanreg /restore and that

appears
to have fixed the problem, maybe? HOWEVER, somewhere along the way

my
"A" floppy drive became my Zip drive and my "D" zip drive

disappeared.

Also, The Boot-Time Diagnostic Screen listed the following: "event

log
messages, enter Setup to view". The BIOS event log capacity

indicated
(no space and invalid). Clearing all DMI event logs fixed that. I'm

not
afraid of the BIOS but no expert at it.

So, how to I get the drive strengthened out and maybe the BIOS

needs
tweaking? I'm about to the point of doing another

format/install.
But I really appreciative you're getting me to this point thank you

both
for your help. I'll do another post for the drive situation and

maybe
another in an appropriate NG for some questions on the BIOS.

Hi Cheryl,
Try the procedures listed here =
Page cannot be displayed and similar errors:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/16.html

A few are only for WinXP/2K, but most are applicable to Win9x.

Thanks for reply Gary, unfortunately I can't get there from

here, as
IE
is inoperative. I will shut down/disconnect or uninstall my
spyware/virus software or use a friend's computer if necessary

to
reach
those URLs. I will let you know if I get it fixed or not.

Sounds to me like you have some active spyware/virus messing

with
your
system. See my article at
http://grystmill.com/articles/security.htm
(if you
can get there.) See, also, http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
