After IE closing slow program open
Hi!
Please, is there any explanation/cure for this problem on a fully updated Win98SE with IE6.0SP1? After closing the reboot fresh quickly opening IE, all the program openings, incl. IE itself, will get extremely slow, i.e. upon opening of any program there seems to be a 1+ minute wait for something before anything begin to happen ... This problem did pop-up some 10 days ago, and thus I somehow doubt the recent KB908519 hotfix. After trying/testing several fixes nothing seems to solve the problem, but as a note, after refreshing the Desktop Icon Cache, by changing the Icon size from 32 to 28 or vice versa, the openings seem to get back to the normal quick speed, but just after closing the IE once again they'll slow down to the 1+ minute wait status. The Icon Cache size seems to be set as 8192 in the Registry. Thanks in advance, any comments/hints are appreciated. Best regards, Pete V. |

After IE closing slow program open
Hi!
After still re-testing this case, I have got the feeling, that the problem point is somewhere around the Icon Cache, i.e. 1. before opening the IE, or having one IE window open, you may open/close any program without any problems, even the second/third etc. IE window 2. upon closing the last remaining IE window the Icon Cache will be "ruined" and it should be rebuild before the next program opening could be done, and now having to wait for some timeout the rebuild would be begun/done taking some 1+ minutes 3. you may do the Icon Cache rebuild by yourself, taking some 2-3 seconds, and through that you'll get to the good working status as also by the 1+ minutes wait for the first program opening, or, of course by rebooting, and get once again to the point 1. status Does this make any sense on this? After IE closing slow program open
Hi!
Thanks for the reply. I did test with some 6 different Icon Cache sizes from 0 to 8192, but there wasn't seen any affect at all to this problem, sorry ... It seems then Icon Cache lead is not the right one for this problem, please, check my other post below for explaining the status for this case. Best regards, Pete V. After IE closing slow program open
Hi!
There seems not to be any "easy" explanation for this problem. The lead of the Icon Cache rebuild or size change didn't actually give any step ahead, it probably has been a false conclusion for a lead, the status is still remaining the same. I have now been doing/testing the following: - the System File Checker didn't give any solution to this - by checking with 4 different programs, there has not been found any viruses, malware, spyware etc. on the system - on the IE all the TIF's, cookies and histories have been deleted - the IE6.0SP1 has been reinstalled and updated And, still the problem remaining the same ... i.e. -- after closing the last IE window, the next (any) program open will begin with waiting for something for 1 minute 15-25 seconds before really opening ... So, what could be the reason for this?? As long as one opened IE window will remain open everything works fine, until the close of the last IE one ... And, a "funny" thing is, this has been true since some 5-10 days for my 2 older IBM ThinkPad's with Win98SE residing at different sites ... so, what on earth may be affecting this ... Please, any leads/cues are much appreciated! Best regards, Pete V. "PeteV" wrote: Hi! Please, is there any explanation/cure for this problem on a fully updated Win98SE with IE6.0SP1? After IE closing slow program open
Hmm. Too bad. Are you saying just the NEXT open is slow-- or is it EVERY open after you close the last IE window? Does it happen in Safe Mode too? What do your resources look like, before/after the problem begins...?...
For investigative purposes... (1) WinTop will show as many tasks running as "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Running Tasks", which is twice as many as Ctrl-Alt-Del. Microsoft's WinTop works in Win98, though written for Win95. It shows individual CPU & RAM usage figures & updates it's display every 2 seconds. Get WinTop from http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d.../w95kerneltoy/ Download it into a folder of it's own. It's a single executable called "W95KRNLTOYS.EXE". After IE closing slow program open
Hi!
Thank you so much for your effort PCR, will be checking the tools you mentioned, as a complement for the Process Explorer v8.61 and Memory and CPU Observer v2.3. Sorry, the problem seems to be somewhere else, close to the area I've been pointing but not just there, but on one certain page address, probably since some 10 days and hopefully just temporarily, i.e. the main home page address of my ISP, http://elisa.net , which I have been using as my IE home page already for ages!! So, after visiting at that address and closing the last IE window, any first program opening after that will begin first with "thinking" lasting some 20 seconds extra (yesterday even some 1 minute 20 seconds) before really got to the program opening 1-3 seconds phase ... It seems the point is somewhere on the visit at that address, which upon IE closing will have some affect generally on all program openings, i.e. maybe has "ruined" something, which has to be rebuild/refound for the next first program opening ... Cute, isn't it, causing some 10 hours investigation/re-installing/checking/testing etc. etc. ... Thanks anyway, I'll come back if finding something new to tell on this. Best regards, Pete V. After IE closing slow program open
Well, DAMN, the same thing happened to me with that site! First of all, it hadn't completely LOADED per the IE Status Bar & a placeholder icon seemed to be unresolved. After 3/so minutes, I closed the site anyway. It's icon seemed to disappear from the Desktop Toolbar. BUT, clicking to open Explorer after that took a few minutes! Once Explorer was open & shut, a subsequent open/shut was quick, thank goodness.
I don't know what it is, except some processing the site is doing takes time. Perhaps, if we wait for it to totally load, it would not have trouble closing. Then, the very next open of anything after that would be quicker. I don't know. Can you talk to them? I can't! At least McAfee never complained of a virus or anything! -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "PeteV" wrote in message ... | Hi! | | Thank you so much for your effort PCR, will be checking the tools you | mentioned, as a complement for the Process Explorer v8.61 and Memory and CPU | Observer v2.3. | | Sorry, the problem seems to be somewhere else, close to the area I've been | pointing but not just there, but on one certain page address, probably since | some 10 days and hopefully just temporarily, i.e. the main home page address | of my ISP, http://elisa.net , which I have been using as my IE home page | already for ages!! | | So, after visiting at that address and closing the last IE window, any first | program opening after that will begin first with "thinking" lasting some 20 | seconds extra (yesterday even some 1 minute 20 seconds) before really got to | the program opening 1-3 seconds phase ... | | It seems the point is somewhere on the visit at that address, which upon IE | closing will have some affect generally on all program openings, i.e. maybe | has "ruined" something, which has to be rebuild/refound for the next first | program opening ... After IE closing slow program open
Hi!
Still coming back to this topic with some new more detailed notings. First some corrections to my previous posts, - the IconCache rebuild is not due for this problem - maybe neither the KB908519 hotfix So, once again an updated description on the problem and a question on it - after closing the reboot-fresh quickly opening IE6.0SP1 on a Win98SE machine after visiting a certain page with several Flash banners etc., http://elisa.net, the next program opening, incl. IE itself, will get extremely slow, i.e. upon opening of any program there seems to be a 1 minute 20 seconds wait for something before anything begin to happen on the opening procedure itself of that program - after the first program now is got opened after the wait phase everything is working all well once again ... until closing the IE after a visit on that certain page ... - it seems that something on Win98SE is "ruined" by closing IE after visiting that certain page and has to be rebuild/refreshed/waited for or whatever, before any program could get opened, so, what could it be? - anyway, the IE6.0SP1 or display adapter re-installs, or System File Checker or 5 different malware checkings etc. have not been helping at all Is there anyone who would know this type of specific details inside Win98SE/IE and of their behaviour and could give some lead to have the problem source explained and maybe also solved? Thanks in advance for any comments. Best regards, Pete V. "PeteV" wrote: Hi! Please, is there any explanation/cure for this problem on a fully updated Win98SE with IE6.0SP1? After IE closing slow program open
Do you understand the language at that site? Then, go talk to them! It's them, not us! Could be they don't know how to handle a datagram! IE waiting for a response to a packet they won't send, maybe. Kerio shows there is twice as much as the following stuff for them than my NetZero home page. Also, that site seems to show a port has remained open longer than it does for other sites.
