noel: IE uninstall/reinstall
hi noel,
my IE6 SP1 was 'freezing' the desktop on closing after browsing the 'net, with no response to ctrl-alt-del, followed by an 'exception OE...0028:...in VxD' error, needing a manual power-down. none of the remedies suggested in these NGs was of any help. i 'removed' the IE as per your meticulous instr in "Uninstalling and Reinstalling IE in ME" using the IEradicator2001a which has the added function of removing the web view integration from the Explorer Desktop environment, as per its 'readme'. it also says- (Specifically IEradicator2001a removes: * The Sidebar file summaries * Thumbnail image preview in the sidebar * Custom graphics for individual folders * web view). on launching the IE installer then, the needed (full)download size was just 1000kb+ (10000kb+ of the total IE6 file size of 11000kb+ was 'recovered' from my puter by the installer). the thing installed (none of the newer files was replaced by the downloaded older ones)- rebooted- SR fixed- 329115 patch installed- reboot- JET package run- reboot- visited WU and downloaded critical updates (8867801 was unavailable even on searching). SR is working, i've reenabled active desktop and 'web content' is enabled in folder options, but the problems are- 1. sidebar file summaries in folders, except in 'My Documents', are now not displayed 2. thumbnail image preview is now not available (i've run 'regsvr32 thumbvw.dll') 3. web view for folders not available (basically all the extra things IEradicator2001a is supposed to do) 4. the internet dial-up launches on trying to open 'My Documents', before its actual opening 5. 'windows update' shortcut is now missing in start-up menu 6. 'personalized menu' for 'programs' in start-up not working (enabled in start-settings-taskbar and start menu)- i disabled-ok-enabled-oked it to no avail 7. under system info-IE-cache-list of objects, all the listed program files are shown as 'damaged' (Cult3D ActiveX player, Compaq System Data Class, Symantec RuFSI Registry Information Class, sys Class, iCC Class, mhLabal Class, DD_v4.DDv4, Work.MP, YAddBook Class, GDIChk Object) 8. on placing the mouse pointer over any of the minimize/restore/close buttons of a folder or a browser window, no indicative text appears i did the IE uninstall-reinstall yesterday and more problems may yet be noticed. i've repaired IE from add-remove programs also. can you or any of the other mvps guide me to resolve the ones noted above. tia arvind |
