Default KEYBOARD/MOUSE PORT SAYS NOT CONNECTED...WHEN THEY ARE

I was reconnecting the wires on my mom's computer. When I started the
computer up it was telling me that the keyboard and mouse were not connected.
I switched the wires in case I had them connected wrong, but that didn't
work. Just before that we had taken the tower with us on a trip so a friend
could do some work on it. But he only connected to the hard drive and used
his own mouse and keyboard thru his system. So now we don't know why the
mouse and keyboard don't work. I hope someone can help me.
Thank you

1. Does this PC stiill boot DOS from a floppy?
2. Test its KB and mouse on a different PC to
be sure both are in working order.
3. Find out what changes were made to the
wiring and why, in case you can restore them
to working condition.

How far into the startup procedure does the machine get, and exactly what is
the message you get about the keyboard and mouse?

Default KEYBOARD/MOUSE PORT SAYS NOT CONNECTED...WHEN THEY ARE

All I get on the screen is where it is starting to load the words,(ex:
processor, memory testing, primary master, etc.), then it says there is an
error. KEYBOARD ERROR OR NO KEYBOARD PRESENT". At the bottom of the screen
it says to press F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP
/28/2001-SiS-730-6A6ISE19C-00

I am able to press the F1 key then the windows 98 screen comes up...it goes
thru some of its words, then a box comes up and it says:

WINDOWS MOUSE SUPPORT
Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely
attach a serial mouse now.
To attach a mouse to a PS/2 mouse port, you must first turn the computer off.

I did all that....It still didn't work.

The computer worked fine before, we had removed the wires from the back of
the tower. All we did was disconnect the monitor, speaker, mouse, keyboard
and phone line. Then when we reconnected then back on a few days later, now
it is not detecting the keyboard or mouse.

We can get the keyboard to work, but it says it is not detecting it unless
we hit the F1 key. Its the mouse that is not working at all. I tried another
mouse, and it is not detecting that one either. So I don't know what is
wrong.

Three possibilities I can think of:

1. You've plugged them into the wrong holes - easily done; I don't know if
F1 would make something happen under those circumstances, though. (Usually
kbd is the one closest to the mobo base card; also, sometimes coloured
mauve, whereas mouse light green.)

2. One or other or both has gone wrong in such a way that it stops both
working (this depends to some extent on how the mobo is designed - are the
supply lines for the two independent, for example). Diagnosis involves
changing both, I guess. You could also try (if you can find one!) a serial
mouse.

3. The mobo connector(s) is (are) faulty: it's usually one tower connector
with both in, these days (if not part of a megaconnector including USB,
parallel, ethernet, etc. ...). If that's the case, it's probably just a dry
joint, but the thought of taking a mobo out just to touch up the solder on
them ... although, unless you go USB for both, you'd have to take it out to
replace it anyway. Hope it isn't that for you ...
