Default fdisk

I've fdisked a drive (40GB) and erased the primary Dos
partition successfully. When I try to create a new partion
the verification process semms to hang, never getting
beyond 0%. Does this mean the disc is damaged or has been
formatted by some other utility?

Try fdisk /status and see what it says - report back
