Hi Mike,

I will try the KB912812 install again as you suggest with NAV disabled. When
I do this, I will let you know.

In regard to KB911562 issue. YES YES YES simply installing MDAC 2.8 SP1
resolved the script errors in my HP Scanjet 3970 software (HP Director) !!!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I informed HP Tech Support (via Chat) that they
initially pointed me to the wrong version of MDAC 2.8 (they pointed me to the
version dataed 8/4/03). I also told them that they need not have customers
uninstall their scanner software prior to installing MDAC 2.8 SP1.

Also, I have a contact in HP Quality Care support and I called him direct to
let him know of what I learned from you. He was very thankful for he did not
realize that there was a SP1 so he will store that in his bag of tricks. And
I let him know about Component Checker utility and that customers don't have
to uninstall their scanner software.

Can you make a recommendation for a replacement to NAV?

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows XP Service

This update applies to Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the
following operating systems:
Windows XP SP1
Windows 2000 SP4


I am using WindowsME and I know I need to install KB912812. I am just
curious as to why the description does not indicate WindowsME. I am learning
a lot from the discussion groups, and especially from you.

Kathie,

Make sure you get the right version. The 912812 hotfix is for all systems
running IE6 SP1 and IE6 SP2. See KB912812 "MS06-013: Cumulative security
update for Internet Explorer" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=912812)
and look at the section "Applies To" at the bottom of the page and you
will see:
APPLIES TO
•Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1, when used with:
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition

Thanks for the feedback Kathie and I'm pleased to read that your HP
scanjet software is now working as it should.

Can you make a recommendation for a replacement to NAV?


Well, I've seen too much damage caused to Win Me caused by running
Symantec software with LiveUpdate being perhaps the worst of the bunch.
As for alternatives there are plenty to choose from although a couple of
them do have slight downsides. Products I would suggest you have a look
at include:
Avast! (www.avast.com). Free and paid for. Note that Avast currently
inhibits the creation of automatic system restore checkpoints so you will
have to remember to make these manually.
AVG (www.grisoft.com and http://free.grisoft.com) both free and paid for
eTrust EZAV from Computer Associates. For a free one year offer see

NOD32 (http://nod32.softwaresecuritysolutions.com/)
Panda (www.pandasoftware.com)
etc.

Another question!!!
When I get the notification (globe symbol in system tray) and click on it to
take me to the windows update site; and have the scan performed; the site
knows which version to install on my PC? I have been using this functionality
as opposed to my manually searching for the update. Your information is
excellent, since I could easily download the incorrect update had I searched
manually for it.

I will await your reply, confirming most likely what I believe to be true:
using the windows update site, it will know which update to use.

Default KB911562 UPDATE

Hi Mike,

As you know, I was successful yesterday in the install of KB911562.

However, today, I had the notification of needing a windows update. I erred
in how I clicked on the globe in the system tray, and the update launched.
This was for KB911562 - and I got a successful install message.

I went to the MS update site to check on installation history, and it shows
a failed status for KB911562 today (automatic update) and yesterday's
install of KB911562 shows successful status (web).

I am very puzzled. I looked in control panel, add/remove programs, and don't
see KB911562 nor do I see it when I do "about I.E.".

Pearls of wisdom, once again? And I thought I was out of the woods.

And since the re-install of KB912812 last night at 11:16PM, I have not had
any Kernel32.DLL errors. I will keep my fingers crossed on this one.

Hello Mike,

I want to give you further information regarding the automatic update that I
wrote previously to you about, for which I have yet to receive a reply. As of
now, 4/27/06, the status of my system according to the Windows update site
indicates "There are no critical updates available at this time."

As I mentioned to you, I got a successful install message at my desktop for
the "automatic update" for KB911562 on 4/26/06. However, when I went to the
Windows update site and viewed my installation history, it shows that this
failed (source: automatic update). I want to note the descrition:

"Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 (KB911562)"

Whereby, on 4/25/06, the installation history shows there was a successful
update (source: web site) and note the description:

"Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 Service Pack 1
(KB911562) "

Comments?

And to recap previous posts of this thread, I installed on 4/25/06 MDAC 2.8
SP1 and then installed KB911562 in order to allow my HP scanner software to
function correctly (without script errors). As the installation history

The update status WRT the MDAC updates is perfectly as expected in your
circumstances.
The update is not a patch for IE, and therefore won't appear in the AboutIE
listing.
Updates do not always appear in the Add/Remove listing - usually because
such updates are not designed to be removable, for a number of (good)
reasons.
