Noel,

Your MDAC download appears to be just what I was looking for to fix my
Works Calendar and Help failures after the KB911562 UPDATE.

How did you get past the Validation Required (genuine Microsoft Windows)
for the MDAC download that I could not get around at

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Supposedly validation is not required for Windows Me genuine Microsoft
Windows downloads, but I was not successful.

Default KB911562 UPDATE

Hi,

Maurice sent me over to this newsgroup.

When I installed KB911562 my HP Scanner director would not function, it got
script errors... I bypassed them, but to no avail. So I backed out KB911562.

I called HP support. HP had me uninstall the HP software and download MDAC
2.8 and the URL given to me was for simply MDAC 2.8

I reinstalled the HP software, reinstalled KB911562, and still had the same
problem.
Seeing that the MDAC 2.8 download did not resolve my problem, I backed that
out.

Now, days later, here I am. I am happy to read this thread. I now realize
that HP tech probaby gave me the wrong URL to use since it was not for MDAC
2.8 SP1
By reading the posts of this thread, I learned about the component checker.
It shows that I have MDAC 2.8 RTM.

Later on today (it is now 02:36EDT, so I will get some slumber) I will
install MDAC 2.8 SP1.

Do you think I can simply install the MDAC 2.8 SP1 or should I first
uninstall the scanner software (then install MDAC 2.8 SP1), then reinstall
the scanner software? My inclination is to follow the HP tech's directions,
but I figure no harm in asking!

Then I will reinstall the KB911562 update.

Another issue, perhaps not for this thread, but I must mention that KB912812
(I believe released the same day as KB911562, or close to) has caused
sporadic KERNEL32.DLL errors upon close of I.E. I am at version
6.0.2800.1106 and have kept up to date with the "updates". However, due to
the KERNEL32 errors, I have backed out KB912812. Any thoughts?

I will post back with the results of my KB911562 drama.

Thanks for the great information!!!

~ K

It appears that not all users are experiencing problems accessing Help &
Support after installing the KB911562 hotfix for MDAC 2.8.

I've carried out some further tests and can report that the problem
appears to be confined to those installing KB911562 over the original RTM
version of MDAC 2.8. Those installing KB911562 on systems running MDAC
2.8 SP1 are seeing no problems.

Personally yes, that is what I would do. If the scanner software was
previously working OK my first approach would be to install MDAC 2.8 SP1
and KB911562 (the version for MSAC 2.8 SP1 or course g) and only take a
different approach if this doesn't work.

I haven't been seeing similar reports to yours of problems so the 911562
hotfix may not be the cause here. Incidentally the 911562 and 911562
hotfixes were both released on 11 April - "patch Tuesday, the second
Tuesday of the month. Kernel errors such as you are seeing could have
been caused by a damaged install or download or possibly due to your AV
application "interfering" during the installation.

Default KB911562 UPDATE

Hi Mike,

Thanks so very much for the reply and your guidance. I will try what you
suggest, and then post back.

Because of your reply regarding the Kernel32.DLL errors, I may have not been
clear regarding my anomaly. It is KB912812 that is somehow causing the
KERNEL32.DLL errors. I initially talked with Manju of Windows ME technical
support on 4/17/06 regarding my sporadic "I.E. has caused an error in
KERNEL32.DLL" errors upon close of I.E. She advised at that time to disable
my Norton AV whenever installing an update. After my call to her, I disabled
Norton AV and re-installed KB912812 - but the errors continued. Although it
is not clear in my notes, I believe I installed KB912812 over the top (in
other words, I did not back out the KB912812 that I initially installed with
my Norton AV having been ENABLED).

Thus I had this scenario:
Installed KB912812 with Norton AV enabled.
Encountered KERNEL32.DLL messages.
Called MS support.
Disabled Norton AV.
Installed KB912812. Errors continued.

I backed out KB912812 a couple of days ago via use of the Control Panel -
Add/Remove programs and I no longer get the KERNEL32.DLL errors.

Do you think/know that we can't re-install an update without first backing
out the same update, such as described above with KB912812. At the time, I
did not think I needed to first uninstall KB912812 prior to re-installing it
again.

As an aside, up until the other day, I never disabled Norton AV prior to
doing the MS updates - and I guess I have been fortunate to not experience
any adverse fallout over the years.

Thanks for your help and I await your reply.

Default KB911562 UPDATE

Kath,

No reply other than to say I'm sorry but I am unable to support those
using NAV other than to urge them dump it and use an AV application that
actually works with Win Me rather than destroying the system.

I would nevertheless strongly urge you to uninstall 912812 (or use system
restore and roll back to a checkpoint created before you first installed
this patch) and then try download again and reinstall 912812 but this time
with NAV disabled for the entire duration of the download and install.

Ah I see you have already uninstalled 912812 so you can ignore the first
part of the paragraph above.

Regards,
