Default PDF vs. Resources

At times Adobe Acrobat Reader6 seems to eat up a tremendous amount of either
memory and/or system resources, specifically when downloading larger pdf
files, up to the point where there is not enough memory left and it is being
suggested to exit some programs, in order to free up space.
Is there anything that can be done to avoid or prevent this from happening
and, if so, what would it be?
Given enough time the pc recovers on its own and I already did disable some
start-up items with 'msconfig'.

Harry.

Harry,

Rather than opening a pdf file in Internet Explorer, try right clicking on
the file and safe to your desktop after which you can open and read it.
You could also consider using an alternative to Adobe Acrobat such as
Foxit (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php).

Thank you Mike.
What will happen to the existing Adobe files after I'd change to Foxit? Can
it open them?
That may sound illiterate to you, but it's a question for me.
At any rate, I am going to try the desktop method first.

Harry.

Harry,

Yes. Foxit can read most if not all pdf files generated by Adobe Acrobat
and other pdf generators.

That may sound illiterate to you, but it's a question for me.
At any rate, I am going to try the desktop method first.

Best of luck,

That will surely set me straight, Mike.
Thanks again and for the luck also.

Foxit works mighty slick, Mike, but I get this error message, that windows
cannot find a pdf file, even though it found it, so I just click it 'off'.
But why the message? Should I simply ignore it?

Harry.

To All:
By now I am able to answer my own question(s):
Apparently that message was due to the presence of the plug-ins for the
Acrobat Reader. Once I removed and then reinstalled the Acrobat Reader and
reassigned Foxit as the active Reader, those pesty messages were gone and
Foxit is in its element. But Acrobat must still remain as a program, or the
plugins will become just 'word' files.
If there is a way around this, I would like to know it.
Thanks.

Harry.

Oh boy, Noel, here it goes:
When I mentioned plugins, I was referring to the files with the Acrobat
icon. As I opened them, the warning message about missing plugins was
displayed. In my thinking, those files were plugins, but that apparently is
wrong.
Where do I look for the "plugins" to delete?
Hopefully I don't 'bore' you.

Harry.
