Default Major errors in config.sys & Autoexec.bat

I am not an experienced computer user, and my system
crashed. I educated myself regarding reinstalling, and
suggestion was to format C: and reinstall. Something went
wrong during installation, ( probably something I did or
didn't do ) and now I am having problems with start-up. I
used the configure system tool - in system information and
came to the conclusion that the config.sys & autoexec.bat
files have BIG problems. These files contain the wrong
system information. If I try to start-up, the computer
doesn't recognize the proper system settings, and I get
this message asking if I want to start using cd-rom
support, so the computer isn't even recognizing that I
have a cd-rom. If I choose a selective start-up I can omit
loading the config.sys & autoexec.bat files, but then it
starts saying I have no extended memory manager and I get
constant freeze-ups, error messages, ect.

If anyone can give me easy-to-follow, straight forward
advice on how to fix these problems, I would be so
grateful. Please remember, I know little to nothing about
windows, so something you may think is elementary, may be
beyond my knowledge, but I am trying to learn ! Thanks.

Open both files and copy and past their contents (not the files) in a post
back to this thread. Someone should be able to tell you what to take out.

Default Major errors in config.sys & Autoexec.bat

You have managed to get the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files from the
installation floppy onto the hard drive, and they have become your default
files for normal startup. This can happen if you installed using a copy of
the installation files on the hard disk.

Rename these two files with a new extension - eg CONFIG.OLD and AUTOEXEC.OLD
and reboot. The machine will probably run OK without these files. However,
if your system needs DOS drivers for some purpose (eg, a very old CD drive)
then you will lose that device and it will have to be re-installed.

Default Copy of files, as/ request

Here is a copy of the files. Your help is greatly
appreciated. By-the-way, thank-you, to both Ron & Jeff,
for your quick responses. ( I bet you hate dealing with
computer "newbies"! )

This is the messed-up config.sys file:

rem Moved by Windows Setup - please do not load any
drivers above the following line
rem TShoot: device=aspi4dos.sys

rem Moved by Windows Setup - please do not load any
drivers above the following line

[menu]
rem TShoot: menuitem=CD, Start computer with CD-ROM
support.
rem TShoot: menuitem=NOCD, Start computer without CD-ROM
support.
rem TShoot: menuitem=HELP, View the Help file.
rem TShoot: menudefault=CD,30
rem TShoot: menucolor=7,0

[CD]
device=C:\WINDOWS\himem.sys /testmemff
rem TShoot: device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
rem TShoot: device=btdosm.sys
rem TShoot: device=flashpt.sys
rem TShoot: device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
rem TShoot: device=aspi2dos.sys
rem TShoot: device=aspi8dos.sys
rem TShoot: device=aspi8u2.sys
rem TShoot: device=aspicd.sys /D:mscd001

[HELP]
device=C:\WINDOWS\himem.sys /testmemff

[COMMON]
dos=high,umb
devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\ramdrive.sys /E 2048

I think I may have corrected the autoexec.bat file, but if
someone wouldn't mind looking at it, here it is:

PATH
C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\PAGEMGR\IMGFOLIO; C:\PAGEMG
R

Thanks, again
Kim

There is nothing useful in these files. Try renaming them as advised above
so that the system boots without any AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS, and see
what happens.
