KB891711 WINDOWS 98 PATCH?????
Yes, along with several other items that you don't mention.
I suspect you have disabled a bit too much, though I have no idea why you have volume control in Startup. Exactly what did you disable and why? ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Tue, 25 Apr 2006 03:49:01 -0700, in microsoft.public.win98.apps, margie wrote: Does the above need to be in the startup, i have disabled everything else except volume control and AVG -Grisoft anti virus. |

KB891711 WINDOWS 98 PATCH?????
HP told me to disable all these things, except AVG.
I have now enabled the two power profiles scan registry critical updates KB891711 Should I enable any thing else. I think the volume control was in the system tray which I have ticked as well. Any help would be appreciated. I have only just found this answer, thanks -- margiegirl "Alan Edwards" wrote: Yes, along with several other items that you don't mention. KB891711 WINDOWS 98 PATCH?????
I don't see anything there that is absolutely necessary.
(Assuming your Brother printer is happy with that and you don't want the extra buttons on your keyboard) I don't know about the HP items. You might try checking on a Startup site like http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php The Aureal scumware is certainly not necessary. Why exactly are you doing all this? You didn't make anything clear when you asked about the KB patch. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Fri, 28 Apr 2006 21:06:02 -0700, in microsoft.public.win98.apps, margie wrote: Further to my previous listing I just re read yours and this is what I have disabled. KB891711 WINDOWS 98 PATCH?????
Thanks Alan. It is my elderly neighbours computer and it was really slow, so
got rid of McAfee and put AVG in. It had started making a different noise on start up so got onto HP Chat and they said to clean inside, could be the fans and also said to disable everything in start up except AVG, so that is what I did, but then started worrying about the above patch not being ticked and thought perhaps a few other things should be ticked. It is running very well now and printer seems ok not being in start up. Many thanks and if you have any more advice I would appreciate it. -- margiegirl "Alan Edwards" wrote: I don't see anything there that is absolutely necessary. KB891711 WINDOWS 98 PATCH?????
Disabling startup items is a common diagnostic procedure - it simplifies the
system while you try to work out what's wrong. If you are concerned about performance and stuff that's accumulated over the years then you should be uninstalling things you don't need, not disabling them in startup. However, looking through your startup items is a good guide to what might be slowing the system and what you can do without. A noisy fan is common with an old machine. If the noise comes and goes it indicates that the fan is slowly failing. Cabinet fans can usually be easily replaced. Power supply fans are a little trickier, as they require some disassembly and may be soldered in - in some cases it's easier to replace the whole power supply. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "margie" wrote in message ... KB891711 WINDOWS 98 PATCH?????
Thanks Jeff, I will enable more in startup next time I am working on his
computer. Perhaps the Hp things , printer , keyboard manager, task monitor. Many thanks for the info re fan, it is intermittent so that may be what is happening, the fan slowly failing. Why would Install Aureal Demos be on his computer at all?????????? Probably something he has downloaded unknowingly. -- margiegirl "Jeff Richards" wrote: Disabling startup items is a common diagnostic procedure - it simplifies the system while you try to work out what's wrong.
