Antispyware, virus protection and other alike programs

That is bad, not everyone can afford a new computer or even want one. I have an aunt who just walked out of the store with a new computer, and 22" LCD monitor for around $388 plus tax. (Before anyone says anything not everyone is on dsl). I know. A lot of my friends have Comcast, or Charter cable instead of DSL! Dont say if you got a computer, you can afford a new one. Not always true. I suppose the homeless can't, but ... I happen to like windows 98se/ME. I don't dislike either; but I hated rebooting the old Pavilion in the garage every other day because it was running low on system resources. It runs Windows XP HE (upgrade version; cost $99 + tax), though it would do better with more RAM. The only one I know that will support windows 9x is clamwin open source. I hope they don't change their minds. Kernelex may not work with all win9x software. Now, I see why some people buy cheap copies of windows xp. That may or may not be legal. Main obstacle to a system upgrade will be hardware. I've worked on five computers, mix of Windows 98SE and Windows ME, which won't make the cut for an upgrade. Really old Compaq with Windows 98SE which only had 32 MB of RAM, and only upgradeable to 48 MB; Windows XP wants 128 MB at a minimum, and is dog slow, even with 256 MB. Three of the five are, or will be taken to an electronics recycler. Not sure, yet, about the other two. I have two HP Pavilion 6745Cs, which came with Windows ME. One is already upgraded to Windows XP HE. I am not sure what I will do with the other. Yet. If you don't have the hardware to support Windows XP, you are better of not trying. But there are so many things I am able to do with my new HP Pavilion m7590n (well, not so new, now), that I could never do with my old HP Pavilion 6745C. Granted, though, the current equivalent of my new computer is going to run about $1200, not $388 ... -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

Antispyware, virus protection and other alike programs
Hi Harry:
Thanks for asking and getting a definitive answer from the Avast staff to this question of Win 98/ME support after 2009. There's no more doubt at this point. Cheers, Jerry "webster72n" wrote in message ... Here is their response: Hi Harry, Unfortunately, yes we will stop to support Windows ME and 98 at the end of the year.
