No Windows - Noel
I couldn't reply to the response you gave me on my first
post. Nothing shows up on the Safe Mode other than those two files from McAfee. I'm using Microsoft ME and I've installed a 3rd party DVD using the USB connection and a D- Link Wi-Fi card (which was all working until...I tried to remove the kazaa icon in the tray). System crashed and only rebooted to the screen without any icons. I tried using the System Disk, but the DVD doesn't respond. I changed the sequence from Hard drive to CD in the bios but that didn't work either. I can use the F8 button to get to the normal, safe mode, or step by step. Here's step by step: process the sytem reistry? create a starup log file (bootlog.txt) enable SMARDRV disk cache loading and initializing IFSHLP.SYS sriver load all windows drivers vnetsup.vxd ndis.vxdjavasup.vxd vnetbios.vxd vredir.vxd dfs.vxd PELMOUSE.VXD MRTRATE.VXD C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHINIT.VXD TURBOVBF.VXD msmouse.vxd I then get the mainscreen, ms logo sound and the McAfee logo. When I close the program, all I get is the 2 McAfee programs - that's it. Oh Gawd - at least we probably know the cause - viral infection through
Kazaa!! You'd need to change the boot order to boot from the USB, rather than the CD to have a chance of that working - and I have no idea whether it would anyhow. (most motherboards until recently didn't support booting from an external drive, and I'm not sure that the ME boot disk can cope with it anyhow, but it's worth a shot) Unless you can get an internal drive of some description (preferably floppy), you may be reduced to having to slave the HD to another PC, run a virus scanner over it, and see if that cures it. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "rickyb" wrote in message ...
