Default A drive

Last week we had a lightening strike which knocked out
our cable TV. The computer continued to run OK. But I
needed the A drive which I hadn't used for some time. When
I tried to use it, it wouldn't read the disks, even the
commercial ones. It kept giving me excuses like, " This
disk hasn't been formatted" or "unable to open this disk".
It had worked well before. What gives?

I doubt the two events are related--it is more likely the drive heads are
not aligned correctly. Put a disk in the drive pressing on the right
corner. Try reading it. If no luck, try pressing the left corner. You may
have to do this several times and if the drive starts reading the disk, the
drive is shot. A new one costs about $11 here in San Antonio. You can also
try booting up with a W98 start up disk and if it reads OK, the problem may
be your W98 system.
