Oops....that's what happens when I copy and paste off a web page instead
of off the address bar.
Here's the complete link:

Thanks for the complete link.

As an update to the original problem that, as you know, I have been pursuing
in the group: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion
in thread 'Device manager, no monitors branch'.

It appears the message:
'Windows protection error, you must restart your computer'.
may be caused by the NVIDIA graphics card Forceware and/or by chnages
required to the motherboard BIOS when the latest Forceware drivers are
installed.

Previously you questioned the card drives and I asserted the latest drivers
were being used and correctly installed, but I may have been mistaken about
that, as the updated drivers 81.98 seem to be the root cause of the trouble.

For info only:
The NVDIA FAQ's (on the NVIDIA USA) site relating to this problem a
Answer ID 40 -Windows protection error
Answer ID 805 BIOS setting recommendations

The windows protection erors have ceased after removing the NVIDIA drivers
81.98 and revising the BIOS settings, specifically setting
'Video BIOS Shadowing' to isable.

It may be that with the above BIOS change the 81.98 drivers could now be
re-installed.
I don't know.

As the issue appears to have been caused by upgrading to the latest drivers
perhaps it would be best to go back to old drivers that came in the box with
the card.
