Upgrade 98
I have an old Sony VAIO desktop that is in great shape and it has 64 MB. It
only has 98 and I need to upgrade. Can anyone suggest how I can do this effectively? |

What model? What processor speed? With only 64 megs, you're rather limited on what you can reasonably achieve as far as upgrades, while expecting to use the desktop for much of anything beyond 98. IF you intend no hardware upgrades, if running 98Gold or FE, Win98SE would be a logical upgrade [though memory should be increased], or a change to Linux, which, depending upon the make, has a GUI similar to Windows, and really doesn't take much "change-over"/learning with the newer compilations to use effectively. Many find it enjoyable. -- ~ -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The *REAL WORLD* of Law, Justice, and Government _______ |

Do you mean add more RAM or did you mean run a newer operating system? To install XP you would need 256 megs of RAM minimum and to install Windows2000 128 minimum would be needed Is Win98 *second edition* supported? If so, that *might* be the way to go BTW: What cpu does your machine have |

Beardog wrote: Sorry a new operating system. I want to use it just for internet use. I have a wireless system but it doesn't support 98. Win98SE should be just fine for that purpose. Perhaps even Win98 itself. Some Internet Service Providers require more than Win98 so that they can install their software, but most times it is not necessary or desirable to install their software. If you give more details on who the ISP will be and what kind of router or modem they (you) use, you may find out how to do it without a change in your Operating System. Some here are very experienced in doing just that. Buffalo |
