Default problem adding hardware

Hi everyone,
I was recently given an mp3 player for christmas and I am
having problems getting my pc to recognise it as a new item of hardware. On
the instructions, it says any p.c that has Windows m.e or higher, that you
do not have to install the software for it to be detected. But I have tried
to connect it without the software installed and nothing happened, so I
installed the software, and still, nothing has happened. I was wondering if
it has anything to do with my u.s.b ports, like a problem that might need
fixing within the p.c set up in general. I also cannot get my printer to
work, which also has a u.s.b lead.
Can anyone help resolve my problem?
Thanks,
Baz.

Check that the USB ports are actually connected (some older machines had USB
sockets on the case - but the motherboards weren't USB-capable!)
Check that you can see the USB section in Device Manager
If you can't see the USB section in Device Manager, and the ports are
connected, then check the BIOS - they may have been switched off there.
