The following icons display in the Activity pane and in the Windows system
tray during the handshake and connection part of the dialing process when a
modem is used.

Modem handshaking
and connection icons
Description
Handshaking is underway. Icons change as the handshake proceeds.
Log in (authentication). Icons change as the program checks if the
user is an authorized user.
IP negotiation. Icons change as your desktop computer is being
assigned an IP address for this dial-up session.
Modem is connecting. Icons change as the modem is connected.
