Default defrag takes 3 hours and still running

Hi,
I have 98SE with a 4GB disk (C.
I have run defrag several times, and it gets
to about 26% after about 3 hours, and then
seems to get stuck. I have run it in safe mode,
and windows mode (with all apps, including AV
and firewall shut down) with same result.
What is going on here?
thanks
bill

Sounds like it is running into a corrupt file. See the defrag and scandisk
troubleshooters located he

Bill

I am wondering whether there is a bad sector on the hard disk or as your
other reply suggests. You need to run Scandisk before running Disk
Defragmenter. If scandisk seems to stop be patient as it can take time to
deal with bad sectors on a hard disk.

I suggest that you remove Temporary Internet Files ( including Offline
Content ) and History. Start Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options,
General, Temporary Internet Files, Delete Files, check Offline Content and
click on OK. Also empty your Recycle Bin. This helps remove a potential
problem when running Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter.

I would then run a "thorough" Scandisk again in Safe Mode. For Options see
that System & Data areas is selected. Then click on Advanced and see that
you have selected:

1. Display Summary -Always.
2. Log file -Append to Log
3. Check files for -Check all three options.
4. Report Ms-Dos Mode name length errors

There is an option to Automatically fix errors which I would check but many
computer buffs do not preferring to investigate the error using the log
before attempting to fix the problem.

When you have successfully run Scandisk run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.

To start Windows in safe mode Click Start, and then click Shut down. Click
Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft
Windows 98 Start-up Menu appears. For some machines, you can use F8 instead
of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Start-up Menu. Enter the number
for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.

Notes In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no network,
Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start
Windows). You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other
devices.

Hope this helps.

Just got the retail version of Diskeeper 8.0 Home Edition, instead of using
MS defragmenter program.

Seems to work no matter what or how many apps you have loaded (27 run on
this desktop after startup is complete). Warning: all your apps and windows
operation will slow down in operation while Diskeeper is actively
defragmenting. But we're used to this.

I did find one glitch in the install which I fixed myself. This "glitch"
prevents the program from working upon reboot from install. Setup writes
the actual path to diskeeper to the autoexec.bat file. It does two things
wrong in this process, it includes quotation marks on each side of the path
statement line, and does not use 8 character dos name for the directory, and
8 character dos name for each subsequent subdirectory name.
Befo
"C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper\"
After my fix:
C:\Progra~1\Execu~1\Diskee~1\
The before line would work in ME and XP in the windows portion of their
corresponding path statements, but not 95/98. Sent corresponding note at
their support section of their website.

Another warning I found was if a software installation writes an older
version of MMC, Diskeeper has to be reinstalled for it to work. MMC is
called to open Diskeeper.

Diskeeper also suggests much free space in order to process the
defragmentation quickly. It also denotes in order of speed what slows down
the PC during this process and any other process: the cpu or processor, the
physical memory or ram, and most of all the hard drive itself.
