Default Unable to access HTTP ater spyware

Hi,

I have a strange problem with my father's computer. It was recently
subjected to some spyware which included a browser hijack which I have
removed. I've rebooted and the machine seems fine. However after about 5
mins of surfing the web I am getting unable to access site errors on all
sites I attempt to access. I am able to access email and newsgroups but no
internet. If I disconnect the net connection and reconnect again I still
get the same error. I have to completely reboot the machine to get web
access but the same fault happens again after about 5 mins.

Due to the browser hijack I thought it might have been a problem with IE so
I tried an alternative brower to test this fact but i'm still getting the
same problem. I've removed dial up networking and reinstalled TCP/IP and
drivers but still no luck. I can't access the web but the strange thing is
that I can go into the command line and PING any website I want so I dont
this it is DNS error or anything.

I'm posting here because i'm out of ideas. Any further help at this point
would be greatly appreciatted by me.

Thanks.

Corrupted TIF??
Have a look for the Temporary Internet Files folder - how much is in it?
Open Internet Properties, and Delete the TIF from there - include all
offline content - close, and refresh the Explorer view - how much is still
there?

I did that when I was clearing out the spyware. My clearing also included
all cookies as well as data.

I've also checked for further spyware but it is still all clear as far as I
can see.

I don't think it's a problem with IE browser because I've tried surfing the
web with another browser and I still can't surf.

Duh - I missed that in your original post!
Next - what kind of connection do you have to the Internet? (try rebooting
your Router, if you have one)

It's an ADSL modem not a router. My first instinct after I could see it
wasn't the browser was to reinstall all drivers including DUN and protocols.

I'm really stumped about this one...

Thankyou. I'll try this when I get back to the machine tomorrow.

It does look to me like something in the background in Windows is freezing
up / crashing after using the web for a time. I think it's a good chance
this is file corruption caused by Spyware.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

* * * Please report back your results * * *

Do you have a firewall installed? If so, disable it and see if that allows you
Internet access. If not, uninstall it, reboot and see if you can now access the
Internet.
