Default What's the EASIEST way to fix this issue???

Hi... I have a PC with Win98se and I'm not able to fully load Windows.
It will partially load, then I get the following error message.

The MSVCRT.DLL file is linked
to missing export NTDLL.DLL:
RTLGetNTVersionNumbers.

I have been given many suggestions on how to fix this. Before I go any
further, I DO NOT have my Win98se disk. It has been suggested to me
that the way to resolve this issue is to somehow EXTRACT those 2 files
from that disk.

Now... since I don't have the disk, would I be able to get these files
from an XP cd if I can somehow get ahold of one?

Is there any other way I could obtain these two files and install them?

I AM NOT very computer "saavy", so not having my PC for several days is
really making my life miserable... lol

Any suggestions onwhat my best course of action would be?

Thanks in advance

LEESA (I)

PS: I have read the Microsoft reccomendations, however again, it is
quite technical.

I'm not even sure I can access things such as SFC (system file checker)
etc... from the place where Windows stop loading. I can get to the
command prompts and safe mode though.

You can... "START button, Run, SFC"... in Safe Mode. It will want to
extract files from Windows Installation .cab's. So...

"START button, Find, F/F, Win98*.cab" (That's asterisk-dot)

If 55 of them show up, the FOLDER that contains them is a copy of your
Windows Installation CD. Probably, SFC already knows this, but, if not,
browse to it at the appropriate moment.

Look for a folder, on you hard drive, that has a large number of files that
start with Win98xxx.cab
That folder is a copy of your Windows 98 CD.
This folder is frequently found as a sub folder in a folder called CABS
found in a folder called OPTIONS found in the WINDOWS folder. But, it
could be a totally separate folder, depending on who set it up.
The easiest way to find this folder is to go to START - FIND files and
folder and look for *.cab (the * is a wild card for any name file)
Once you know where these CAB files are, when asked for your Windows 98CD,
just redirect the request to that folder.

PS. When writing to news groups, don't use your real email address unless
you want to get a lot more spam.

You don't need both files, just msvcrt.dll as it is the one that came
in from somewhere and is NOT meant for 98. 98's nt.dll does not have
that function call so you should be getting that error (it's a good
thing). Either of these packages has a msvcrt.dll file that will work
but I'm not sure if installing them will fix you up due to the newer
(XP?)msvcrt.dll you are currently running.

msvcrt.dll version 6.00.8337.0
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d...es/Default.asp

msvcrt.dll version 6.00.8797.0
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;259403

But you can use winzip on these packages to extract the file to some
work folder and then use SFC to replace the file manually from that
folder. I believe the second link will require that you open another
..exe using WinZip as it is an .exe inside of another .exe and these are
self-extracting exe files. Msvcrt.dll goes in the Windows\System
folder and if it is in use, then SFC will tell you that you need to
reboot in order to complete the file replacement - just do so.

Type 'SFC' into the Run Box and select 'extract one file from
installation disk'. You don't need the installation disk despite this
prompt. Later, in a second pop-up box, you will point the source for
the desired file to the work folder that contains the extracted
msvcrt.dll file and that takes care of that. Then make the destination
the Windows\System folder.

I haven't rebooted in Safe Mode to see if SFC is available there, but
it should be? I also haven't had a chance to work out if the above
'updates' will replace a higher versioned msvcrt.dll file or not.
There is always the manual 'DOS' way via a floppy from another computer
if nothing else works for you.

You may also have a msvcrt.BAK file that should have been created when
the XP one flew onto the scene. Check it's properties, 4/23/99 is the
date for the original 98se one here. If so, then copy it to the work
folder, rename it to .dll extension and proceed with above SFC method.

I'm losing it here.... : - ( Before I go any further, let me thank
everyone for their input.

The problem is..... all of the suggestions made here keep telling me to
go to START.. RUN etc.... stuff like that. But.... I cannot get that
far in Windows to do that. Or... if I can, I don't know how.

On start-up.... as suggested, I keep hitting F8. After I do that I get
a screen with all of these options such as SAFE MODE, COMMAND PROMPT
etc.... I think there are 6 of them there.

Now... when I go into SAFE mode... I still get that same ERROR
MESSAGE, and can't go any further.

Can I get to these CAB files from the COMMAND PROMPT? Because... I
cannot get far enough into SAFE MODE to access the START/RUN feature?

That's the problem here. I need to get further. If there is a way to
do all of this stuff without using START/RUN etc... ?

As far as Win XP. In the future, I'd like to upgrade but for now I
just want to restore my Win98se and it has been heel all because of
this missing file. :-(

Thanks (I)

You are welcome. I thought you said you could get to Safe Mode. Anyway,
at "Command Prompt Only", you may...

C:\DIR C:\MSVCRT.DLL /a /s
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
MSVCRT DLL 278,581 04-06-00 8:10p MSVCRT.DLL
1 file(s) 278,581 bytes

Directory of C:\OPTIONS\CABS\PWS
MSVCRT DLL 280,576 04-23-99 10:22p MSVCRT.DLL
1 file(s) 280,576 bytes

C:\DIR C:\NTDLL.DLL /a /s
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
NTDLL DLL 20,480 04-23-99 10:22p NTDLL.DLL
1 file(s) 20,480 bytes

That will show what they currently look like & their location. Both
belong in C:\Windows\System. Mine are the files of Win98SE updated only
at Windows Update.

Note: NTDLL.DLL has never changed. Probably yours hasn't, either, & it
is MSVCRT.DLL that is the problem, just as Lee said. Here is how to COPY
MSVCRT.DLL from one folder to another...

REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSVCRT.DLL MSVCRT.DLLX
COPY C:\OPTIONS\CABS\PWS\MSVCRT.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

....That is providing you have two, & the second is in
"C:\OPTIONS\CABS\PWS".

Otherwise, EXTRACT it...

"EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System LOC\Base4.cab MSVCRT.DLL"

That is all one line between the quotes with 5 spaces, but do not enter
the quotes. It will offer to overwrite, if one is already there.

LOC is the location of "Base4.cab". This may be discovered as
follows...

C:\DIR /s /a C:\base4.cab
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
BASE4 CAB 168,960 04-23-99 10:22p BASE4.CAB
1 file(s) 168,960 bytes

If you have the .cabs on a CD, you will use your CD-ROM drive letter,
instead of "C:\" in that DIR command.

So, in my case, the command is...

"EXTRACT /a /L C:\Windows\System C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\Base4.cab
MSVCRT.DLL"

All one line: no quotes: there are 5 spaces in the line, including one
after "Base4.cab".

Thanks PCR... That's a little technical for me, but I will give it a
shot. I can get to Safe Mode... but I guess it's "non-functional"
because I keep getting that error message.

Now... If I have the file in my Windows-System Folder... why is it
saying it is MISSING?

Extracting it is NOT an option right now, as I have no CD.

Could I perhaps download it and put it on a floppy and put it in there?

My knowledge here is very green..... lol

So... If it IS in there... should I delete it and then go to the floppy
and put it in?

I am trying to find the easiest soulution to this problem.

Thanks for all the help, I'm just a slow learner. :-)

Thanks

I see.

As Lee said, the file is not missing. It is the wrong version for Win98,
& is trying to access something in NTDLL.DLL that is not there.
NTDLL.DLL is probably OK. Is it's size & date the same as mine. (Well, I
am Win98SE, though.) Yours should be at least that old, no matter.

|
| Extracting it is NOT an option right now, as I have no CD.

My post says how to determine whether you have the Windows Installation
files on the hard drive. If so, you don't need the CD...

DIR /s /a C:\base4.cab

If it shows up, then the folder mentioned has the files...

C:\DIR /s /a C:\base4.cab
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
BASE4 CAB 168,960 04-23-99 10:22p BASE4.CAB
1 file(s) 168,960 bytes

|
| Could I perhaps download it and put it on a floppy and put it in
there?

Try the other ways first. You may have a second copy of MSVCRT.DLL on
the hard drive, even if you do not have the installation files. Try that
DIR in the other post...

DIR C:\MSVCRT.DLL /a /s

....It should find them all, if on C:\.

|
| My knowledge here is very green..... lol
|
| So... If it IS in there... should I delete it and then go to the
floppy
| and put it in?

REName it, as in my post.

|
| I am trying to find the easiest soulution to this problem.

This will get you the file. It may not be the end of the problem. But,
if you can boot afterwards, maybe a Windows Update will do the rest.
