Installing New Software in WinME - New DLL files not updated
I am installing a piece of software called Inspect-it.
There are 5 *.dll files that are newer than theones I currently have on my machine. I am instructed to re-boot before proceeding with the install. I so this and when the machine starts back up I see the message stating that windows is updating files. The files never get updated and the install doesn't continue. This ran fine on a Windows 98 machine. Any idea what might be wrong or how I can update these *.dll files? Thanks. Joanne |

Joanne,
What are those five files? It could be that they are system files and that Win Me's system file protection mechanism is protecting them against being changed to uncertified versions that could problems with other applications or the system itself. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP JBLigh wrote: I am installing a piece of software called Inspect-it. Joanne,
asycfilt.dll, comcat.dll, oleaut32.dll and olepro32.dll are protected by System File Protection (SFP) and can only be replaced by other versions when accompanied with the appropriate catalogue and security certificate. You will see that replacement of these files has been prevented by Win Me's SFP by checking the file sfplog.txt in the windows\system\sfp folder. It would appear that the application you are trying to install is not suitable for installation on Win Me. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Joanne wrote: Here is a list of the dll and htey are all located in c:\windows\system with an older date than the one on the CD I am installing from: asycfilt.dll comcat.dll msvbvm60.dll oleaut32.dll olepro32.dll vb6stkit.dll |

Thanks. Called Inspect-it. There is an alternate way to
install for Win ME. Thanks. Joanne,
Let's hope that doing so does not cause other problems to your system. It is quite easy to "defeat" Win Me's system file protection mechanism but it is there for a purpose and installing applications that require versions of dll files that are not supported on Win Me is, IMO, asking for problems. Here's to hoping that this is not the case with Inspect-it. Regards, -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Joanne wrote: Thanks. Called Inspect-it. There is an alternate way to install for Win ME. Thanks. |
