Default CD-ROM drive won't play audio cd's

When I try to play an audio cd, I get the message " D:\ is not accessible.
The device is not ready." It will read other cd-rom discs (programs, files,
etc) just fine. It just will not play audio cds. This is an old laptop which
came with Win 98SE preinstalled but came with no discs. I have tried
uninstalling/reinstalling, updating the driver, etc. but still cannot play
audio cds.
