Avast Vs AVG free anti-virus
I am looking for free antivirus software for a friend. Did a
Google search including on this group and it seems that it is sort of a toss up between AVG and Avast although Avast has less complaint. BUT noted that support of free version of current Avast is ending and new "beta" has just been released. Any one using it and what do you think about it? TIA An email response is not expected but if desired remove the uk at the end. |

Anti-Vir has worked great for me. It is free for personnel, non-commerical,
non-educational use. Google it and you will find a link and it is made in Germany although this is a slight downside because the support groups tend to be German. However, they are working on a bi-lingual group and it tends to use only a small amount of system resources. It protects my XP and 98SE system although I may switch to the E-trust combined anti-virus and firewall that is free for a year until 1st Feb. 2005. I have a hardware firewall in my router as well as ZA Pro. I won't get into anti-spyware utilities unless you are interested. I did not like Avast. The interface was annoying and I thought it was poorly put together. I have not tried AVG. Hopefully, this is some help to you and gives you another option to consider in your search for a free antivirus program. "Henry" wrote in message ... I have used Avast for several years and prefer it to AVG, primarily because of the support available for the free home edition. I was not aware that support for the free version was ending shortly, so will have to visit their website and see what's up. "Henry" wrote in message ... I have been using AVAST for a while now, after using AVG for some time prior. I
prefer AVAST at the moment. I have heard nothing about support ending....where do you see this? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Henry" wrote in message ... On review I got it just a** backwards. It is AVG that has just
had the revision and is changing its support. Sorry about that. Still seems most I read says Avast is the way to go. That's a relief! Mind you, I wasn't aware that AVG *had* any support for the free version. They certainly didn't seem to have about a year ago when I asked about a problem AVG was causing me (it stopped the 'snap-to-default' option on my mouse from working). I got an e-mail back saying (though not in so few words) that as I was using the free version I could go take a flying one around the Moon. I switched to Avast! immediately afterwards, and have been with it ever since. Excellent stuff. -- Regards Nigel Stapley www.judgemental.plus.com reply-to will bounce |

I have limited experience with Avast, and that is mainly on Windows 95 systems with older Pentium CPUs (under 200 mhz) and with only 32 or 48 mb of RAM. On these systems Avast seems to have a noticeable "who dropped the anchor?" effect. Performance is very significantly slower that it was with AVG6 Free installed on the same hardware.
